qweticowoods Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Looks like I'll be a TA for the math department at UNLV next year... Anyone else headed to sunny Las Vegas?

I lived in LV for 6 years and attended UNLV for 1 year. If you have any questions about the area, please let me know. There is plenty of affordable, off-campus housing available.

Every property management company near campus that I've managed to find has an abysmal rating on sites like Yelp. Thoughts?
jplunk85 Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 I've been told that it's best to stick to neighborhoods SE of campus, like Henderson. Every property management company near campus that I've managed to find has an abysmal rating on sites like Yelp. Thoughts? I'm going to have to go ahead and agree with you there. The area surrounding UNLV is rather gross. It's not necessarily high-crime, but it is trashy. That goes for the entire Las Vegas area except for Henderson and the South/Southeast properties. However, I'm going to say that traffic in Las Vegas is steadily getting worse because so many people are moving there. So, I'd recommend living somewhere close to campus. Commuting from Henderson would make you pull your hair out. I lived immediately off UNLV in some apartments on Claymont and Flamingo (would not recommend), as well as on Spencer and Harmon (would recommend). You can feel free to message me about living there whenever. Las Vegas is a fantastic place, if you like to gamble and shop. Locals get a lot of deals at casinos, and it's nice to rent a hotel once in a while and take a girlfriend out to dinner on the Strip. With that said, it's called Sin City for a reason. I definitely wouldn't stick around for a career in Las Vegas. It's not conducive to a serious study atmosphere. Just keep your head focused while you're out there.

theregalrenegade Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 I've lived in Las Vegas for about five years now - initially coming out of Southern CA. I decided to (finally) pursue a career in academics, starting with my Masters in History. I was denied admission for the Fall 2010 semester, but am enrolled in a couple of classes as a non-degree seeking student per their suggestion. Hopefully, through my work and dedication, they'll see my passion and take me on for the Spring 2011 term. Since I'm working in accounting at a casino, I can't wait to get back into school. Not sure if I plan to stay for the long run at UNLV, but hey, it's the only college in the vicinity and so far I've met some amazing professors.
