totoro1984 Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Hi everyone, I'm applying to stats and biostats PhD programs this semester. How does it look if my letters of rec are from a tenured math professor (research advisor), a lecturer (took multiple advanced math courses with them), and my manager who works at a national laboratory? The first two will be very strong and the last will be reasonably strong, but I"m worried that I only have one letter from a full professor. Thank you.
bayessays Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 I think this is a fine mix if at least one of the lecturer and manager (preferably both) have a PhD in math or statistics.

I'd amend this and say any letter writer should at least have a PhD in a quantitative discipline (e.g., economics, physics, CS) and can attest to your mathematical ability. Prefer those who have PhDs in stats or math.
