hfprospect20 Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 Anyone else applying to human factors/human computer interaction programs?
hfprospect20 Posted October 7, 2020 Author Posted October 7, 2020 Also, just a background on myself. Majored in Sociology, but took six Cognitive Psych courses my senior year once I discovered the HF field. I have one year of research experience in human factors with a professor who was established in the field. Looking to pursue an MS and not a PhD.
islandpoppy Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 Hi @mbat72 I'm thinking of applying to HFE/HCI related programs either Fall 2021 or 2022, still trying to strengthen my app since I don't have research experience. Background: Majored in Cognitive Science, originally was going to do UX Design, but ended up really liking UX Research post-grad/once I started working. Currently doing my own independent research and volunteering on the side to get more projects under my belt. hfprospect20 1

Right now I'm looking at PhD programs in Embry-Riddle, University of Minnesota, University of Washington, Georgia Tech, UC Irvine, and University of Michigan. UCI and UM have Informatics degrees that also cover HCI topics. What schools are you looking at?

I looked at a lot of them, but wasn't sure if my application was competitive enough because my GPA could be seen as pretty average (3.4). So far, I have submitted applications to San Jose State University and CSU Long Beach. I applied to their human factors programs. Both cover HCI topics as well. I used to not feel too confident about that but I talked to some PhD students and a number of them said that SoP and LoR have more weight on the decision (though it doesn't hurt to have a high GPA and GRE score). My background is in Cognitive Science. By the time I apply, I'll have around 1.5 yrs of research experience, and 2.5 yrs of working experience.

Sometimes, I can be too hard on myself as well. Thankfully I should have good LoR and I put a lot of time and efforts into my SoP. And that's a great amount of experience, you application would most certainly stand out. Are you applying this cycle or next cycle?
