zjc664656505 Posted January 2, 2021 Posted January 2, 2021 Hello everyone, I'm one of the MIT EECS PhD applicants for the 2021 fall. Recently, I saw someone already posted that they got acceptance to the MIT EECS Master program, which is so confusing because MIT only has the MEng EECS program for their own undergraduates and anyone who wants to get into their PhD program has to apply their PhD program. I contacted one of my potential POI at MIT, and he said he has not started reviewing the applicants' profiles and will start soon in the next week. It seems very unlikely that anyone can get acceptance at such a early time.
kkdas088 Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 Relax. Check the calendar http://calendars.mit.edu/eecs Seems the meetings related to graduate admissions end on 3rd Feb,2021. So, hopefully after that letters will be sent.

I thought about the implications of that, but I do remember when I checked and performed last minute tweaks the last day, the website glitched many times, often giving an 500 error. Anyways I applied, did any of you reach out to POIs? I got the impression that they didn't want that but I am never sure.

cicolus Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 I heard back from one professor whose work I really like from MIT and he wants to schedule an interview with me. I saw a past post that MIT only interviews borderline applicants. Does anyone know if it is still true? Oh my god I'm so anxious, nervous, arghh... Now I'm afraid if I mess up the interview my chance is going to be 0 afterwards.
Dideng Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 The same for me. Just wonder what's the research field of you? I heard that if you're ESL(English is you second lang) applicant, an interview would generally be necessary to ensure you can communicate well with the Profs you may work with.
anti-anonymous Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Professor I contacted said interviews are standard in their lab. That said, you can imagine if the professor already knows the applicant pretty well (e.g. joined the lab as a undergrad or masters) then there is no need to interview. It seems bizarre to me a prof would accept a student, fund them, mentor them, etc without getting to know the student on a personal level beyond what's on paper. I wouldn't believe everything online as a steadfast rule :).

dcat52 Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 In in the same boat as the unique one. So your said you heard back from the professor, so you reached out to them directly? Out of curiosity, want to share the lab you are interested in?
Dideng Posted January 17, 2021 Posted January 17, 2021 Does anyone know what would be the ratio of getting admitted after receiving an interview?

I approached my PI and he said he will interview only those candidates that have already been selected for the PhD program. IDK if that's true or just a polite way of telling me to F off ? shannon58 Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 I didn't know him. I didn't reach out. He said they typically do at least 1 interview to make sure students are a good fit. He also said to expect offers by mid Feb.
anti-anonymous Posted January 22, 2021 Posted January 22, 2021 I can confirm shannon58. I've had a few interviews (with the same group) and the PI said decisions should be out early February.
cicolus Posted January 24, 2021 Posted January 24, 2021 I had an interview earlier and the Professor didn't tell me anything about the admission process (I wonder if that's a good sign or bad). Does this apply to the entire EECS department or just the lab/group you interviewing with?
