radicaldadical Posted January 13, 2021 Posted January 13, 2021 Hey y'all, I'm fortunately in the best of both worlds where I have acceptances to my two, top choice programs. However, I am struggling to decide which is the best fit for me. Program 1 has a relatively small lab, and I connect very well with the PI who has specific training in my research field. However, the department as a whole is not very diverse and I would be 1/2 minority students. The school is in a more rural area, but the cost of living is low and I can get free rent/utilities my second year. Further, the university only requires that I live in the area for 2/5 years of my PhD program. Program 2 has a very large lab with a lot of different research interests. The PI has wrote me my letter of rec for my GRFP and had secured me an internship with one of my LOR writers last summer. The department is not very well-equipped to support me in my work in some capacity, yet they have a lot of resources. This school has slightly more diversity but it is in a more urban area.
Outer Heaven Posted January 13, 2021 Posted January 13, 2021 I would say go with your gut choice since you can really determine overall fit of the programs. radicaldadical 1
