Thoughts and decisions about where to accept/what to do

Hi,

I would love to talk with anyone about where they are in their thought process for this year and what their plans are (ie taking an offer, reapplying next year, etc). If anyone wants to talk with someone in the same boat or start a thread, please message me or comment below:

This could also be a thread for people who have come this far in the application process and are suddenly starting to question everything.

I only applied to PsyD programs. I got deferred from a few, accepted into Yeshiva's LMHC program after interviewing for the doctorate,  and was wait listed at a PsyD program. Yeshiva was originally my top choice but it would be incredibly expensive to attend, especially if I want to internally apply to the PsyD program which would mean 6 years of tuition and that's assuming I get into the program. I would also have to move to the city which would add up quickly.

I was waitlisted for Kean's PsyD program. I did interview, unlike some other posters on the results page. I'm not too sure I am going to get in and after being wait listed, I doubt I am going to get any funding or GA positions. Pursuing a doctorate in psychology has been a dream for a long time. I hate the idea of waiting to reapply again. I've already taken a few gap years working in the field, have research experience and would like to start making money (and yes, I know that this would come after completing a program and I am ok with that ) but MH jobs with a college degree are low pay high burnout places and I don't want to do another year of that. I am starting to consider a school psych degree or dropping this whole helping field ambition and entering the business world... which has perks of not taking out loans and being able to have a social life. Can anyone relate?

I wish I could relate but I wanted to offer you advice if you wanted to look into the School Psychology route.

If you are wanting to work with children and adolescents (up to age 22 since that's when students can no longer be enrolled in high school) it may be a good route for you to go into. If you want to work within schools (as part of an interdisciplinary team) getting an EdS degree in School Psychology would be a great option.

If you want a flexible degree that would allow you to work as a clinician outside schools, work as in a leadership position within schools, or work in academia a PhD in School Psychology would be ideal. I got interviews at 8/9 schools this cycle and two offers and I am coming straight from undergrad. I have 2 years of undergrad research experience and 4 years combined leadership and education experience (spread across jobs, practicum and student teaching). You would definitely be competitive with your work and research experience if you were to apply to one. You would likely be competitive for the funded programs as well.

Many School Psychology programs have faculty whose research interests are very similar to faculty in Clinical Child programs.

Let me know if you have any questions! I could probably connect you to people who know more about the opportunities if you applied for a school psychology PhD. The School Psychology sub on Reddit would also be a good place to ask!
