Preparing for MPH 2022 Canada

Thought I'd share an update, on Thursday I got accepted off the waitlist to Brock's MPH finally!! After many rejections and a lot of panicking worrying about my career path and general future, I finally have a bit a reassurance that all is not lost!! This thread has been a huge source of reassurance and community for me over this application cycle, so I want to say thanks to everyone who has shared their story and experience, and I'm hoping for good news for others who are also waiting! :)

I'd also be down to connect with anyone else who's part of Brock's MPH! Let me know! Hoping for the best for everyone else, and good luck to those also starting programs this fall!

Hi Lean,

Thank you so much for the reply.

Yes my program is thesis based.

I ended up choosing UBC as my supervisor is much more experienced. Your reply really helped me make that selection.thank you again. I really appreciate it.

I would have a look at how many professors are in the program, or affiliated with it, that have published qualitative research. Have you applied to a thesis-based MPH? I'm not familiar with the schools personally. It might also be more important to find professors with mixed methods/qualitative research experience in your area/population of interest if you have one. They would be able to connect you with others who focus on that area/have helped them in their work.

Getting support for a mixed methods thesis can be very hit/miss as you'd need a professor experienced in that or a supervisory team willing to help with both parts. It can take longer to pass ethics as well. I won't say it's impossible, but unless you're familiar with qualitative research, I don't think the single qualitative course that most MPH programs I've seen offer will set you up very well. If it's your first foray, qualitative research can be a lot to learn (multiple epistemological/ontological approaches to choose from) You will definitely want to supplement that with a lot of your own reading. I took a qualitative course during my MSc., but personally spent months learning theory and methodology before I was comfortable submitting my study design to ethics.

Hi Everyone!! I am considering applying for the MPH program at Brock - part time. Anyone here have any experience applying as a mature student? I am currently a health care professional and am looking to expand my knowledge and skills in the Public Health field. Just looking for any advice or tips!

Thanks,

Hi, everyone! I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have an MBBS degree from Bangladesh. I want to get into the MPH program at SFU. My predicament is that my results were expressed in the pass/fail manner, and WES equated that to a grade point of B, or gpa 3.00. MPH programs have a minimum requirement of 3.3 GPA. I'm feeling very discouraged. Did anyone else get into any MPH program with gpa of 3? Or is there any way to work around this??
