MPH or PhD in Epidemiology? (Canadian)

Hello, 

 

I have a MSc in bioarchaeology, and throughout my studies, I have always had an interest in human health patterns. Until recently, I have focused on ancient cultures. Now, I have been thinking of pursuing a career in public health and obtaining a PhD in epidemiology has been on my mind.

 

I have contacted three universities so far and they have told me that my background would still be sufficient to pursue a PhD in epidemiology. For my end goal, I would prefer to work in industry over academia as a researcher. I have looked at epidemiology job postings on indeed (I am Canadian) and most jobs say they prefer an MPH. With that, very few postings specify a PhD qualification. 

 

So, should I go for a PhD or an MPH? Since I already have a masters, I am hesitant to consider an MPH. Plus, I’ve always wanted to go for a PhD and become a researcher. But again, when I search for epidemiology on indeed, it seems that there is some overlap between MPH and PhD positions. Jobs that list a PhD, as a requirement, also list MPH but you just need to have more work experience. So, when I look at the job postings, I wonder if having a PhD would be a hindrance? 

 

Also, when a job listing specifies an MPH, they also seem to want 2 + years of public health work experience. What counts as public health work experience? I am not sure, if I did choose an MPH program, that I would meet that requirement. I do have volunteer experience - where I help women who are living through domestic violence. But that’s it. What type of work experience is needed/most competitive for aspiring epidemiologists?

The best way to decide on a degree is to do what you've done- look at requirements for jobs you want. If they list an MPH, that sounds like the move for you. I'm not sure why you'd get a PhD if you don't want to do research or be in academia. 

I know plenty of people with multiple masters degrees  

In terms of experience- find an MPH program that allows you to gain work experience while there. It won't be fulltime, but it's something to put on a CV/resume. There are lots of entry level jobs for those with an MPH- you might not be able to get your dream job immediately, or you may need to find a way to leverage/explain your experience in a way that meets their requirements.
