♀HealthMatters Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 Hey everyone, I have an amazing Lenovo from 2015. It still works great doing every day tasks, but if I try and do anything fancy like type too quickly it starts to freak out. I'm getting my PhD in epi starting in September and have the ability to split the cost of a new laptop with my employer (love small businesses). Does anyone have any technical specs if I'll need to be able to run R, SAS, and STATA on my laptop (brands, models, harddrive, ram, etc)? We get free copies of the software from school. Only issue- no Macs, I'm a Windows/Google girl. Thank you!
EPI_Dodgerfan Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 If you want something future proof then go with a desktop computer. If you definitely want a laptop then I'd go with a brand that allows for RAM upgrades (e.g., the Dell XPS 15 line). Some of the larger datasets will require around 32gb of ram in R, especially once you start dealing with longitudinal data.
