Online Social Media

I am planning to apply to Communication or Sociology PhD programs. Anyone have suggestions for schools that have strong programs relating to computer-mediated communication, online social media (Facebook, etc), virtual worlds, etc?

I've heard that Carnegie Mellon is especially strong, but I don't think I will meet their admissions criteria. Any other suggestions?

Sounds like you're looking for programs that I am too! Carnegie Mellon's is good, but as noted, it's top of the list and requires high GRE, etc.

Checkout these two programs that are high on technology, and incorporate Rhetoric/communication:

Another amazing program is Georgia Tech's Phd in Digital Media, but it's as tough, if not tougher, than Carnegie Mellon's:

At Masters level, there is a fairly new program at UCL in Digital Anthropology

Definitely check out out the TISM department at Michigan State. Really strong faculty in that area, with diverse interests.

That MSU program looks amazing! Probably ridiculously hard to get into...

Mich State is a great program. But, I do not think they offer funding to Masters students. I applied there for my M.A. and got in but got no funding...and someone told me they do not fund Masters students.
