  1. Hi All, This is a crosspost from another subforum, since I'm really in need of some advice. I am a US national currently about 16 months into a funded studentship at a post-92 university. Within the first six months of my programme, both my director of studies and second supervisor (who had written the original studentship brief) both left to take up positions elsewhere. Basically, the DOS role was transferred to another individual within my department and the other two have remained as part of the supervisory team. This setup has worked well so far, as we have in person meetings at least every other month and remain in good communication via email and Skype. I have just learned this week this my current DOS is now leaving as well within the next two months. Our department has seen an exodus of people the past year and there are very few people left who I could possibly have supervise me. I am also hesitant to bring in someone else that I would have to manage and might have drastically conflicting ideas about how this research should proceed. My second supervisor, who is at a university more specialist in my area of research, has suggested seeing if I could transfer my registration to his institution and he could then serve as my DOS, which I think would make sense. However, since my funding is through the university and not a research council. I'm not sure if this would even be possible and if it was, how I could go about effecting this change. Any suggestions from people who have experience or knowledge of this type of situation would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  3. As of April 2012, you are no longer able to get a Tier 1 PSW (post-study work) visa following the completion of a degree course at a UK university. Therefore, in order to gain employment, your employer will need to sponsor you, which can be quite difficult, especially given the extensive cuts to arts/humanities (with more to come). Something to keep in mind..
  4. A practical tip: I would limit my caffeine intake before the interview. During my presentation on Monday, the combination of nerves and espresso was really difficult to control
  5. The Material Culture department at UCL, which contains the Digital Anthro MSc, has several PhD students focusing on things such as WoW, etc.
  6. If I'm being honest, I'd like to run my own start-up/institute. I'm particularly interested in educational technologies and concepts like minimally-invasive and democratic educational models, so I could see these being a key component. Thanks.
  7. Hi everyone, I am just finishing up a master's program at UCL in anthropology, although my research has been heavily focused on educational theory and practice. I am considering going on to do an EdD program, although I would not be able to be a full-time student and would like the flexibility to pursue it wherever I work. So far, two of the prominent ones I have come across are at U of Liverpool and Nova Southeastern University (although the latter does require some residency periods). I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these programs or if they had another one to suggest. Also, I have read a lot of conflicting literature on the value of an EdD. Would appreciate any candid feedback on this front. Thanks for your time.
  8. At Masters level, there is a fairly new program at UCL in Digital Anthropology http://www.ucl.ac.uk/anthropology/digital-anthropology/
  9. I have been waiting on my first choice for several weeks, and having contacted both admissions and the department, they were not able to give me a definitive time for when decisions would be made. Unfortunately, I have two offers which have expiries in the next 7-10 days. Would it be improper to contact the Convener directly (I have exchanged emails with them several times before regarding questions about the program) and explain my situation and ask for an indication about the potential success of my application?
  10. I applied towards the end of March, so hoping to hear in the next week or two. What other programs did you apply to?
  11. I took an undergrad honours degree in history from a Canadian school, but am looking at MA visual anthropology programs in the UK for next fall. Since there will be limited funding available for me, but I should be able to meet the cost regardless, what factor would you place higher in making a decision-access to facilities or the overall reputation of the school? Thanks
  12. I have applied to some of the well known programs in the UK (Goldsmiths, Manchester, Oxford) and the programs in Berlin and ANU in Canberra. I was wondering if there are any other current applicants out there or former students who would care to discuss their experiences in the program.
