lenin333 Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 I got a letter saying that your file is now complete and headed to the appropriate department. That was 1.5 weeks ago or so. I am applying for the PhD, so I might be in a different boat than you.
kant's mistress Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 I'm applying to the PhD program, too. The office admin just told me vaguely that decisions would "start going out by mail on March 15," but it wasn't really clear if that meant all decisions would go out or if funding offers would be included. I haven't seen numbers, but my impression is that NSSR does not fund many students and that those they do fund are not funded very well (i.e., sometimes it's just a tuition waiver). Does anyone know about the funding stuff? While I'm on the subject, I'm also just curious if people have the impression that NSSR is outside of the mainstream of poli-sci to a fault, or if their approach is successfully integrating unconventional approaches into mainstream poli-sci (this is especially important, I think, in terms of placement and publishing prospects).
JordanJames Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 While I'm on the subject, I'm also just curious if people have the impression that NSSR is outside of the mainstream of poli-sci to a fault, or if their approach is successfully integrating unconventional approaches into mainstream poli-sci (this is especially important, I think, in terms of placement and publishing prospects). I've heard their reputation is pretty good when it comes to producing political theorists, but that's all I've heard that relates to placement. I also know that if you go to the New School, you're most likely a socialist or communist enemy of the USA and probably will commit a treasonous (if you're American) act or two during your lifetime. (I'm just kidding, don't be offended)
kant's mistress Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 well, you'd have to commit treason. that's how you maintain "university in exile" status.
lenin333 Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Ammar, Why do you think that I applied? Sincerely, Lenin
kant's mistress Posted March 11, 2008 Author Posted March 11, 2008 I like that the revolution has learned levity.
JordanJames Posted March 11, 2008 Posted March 11, 2008 Yeah, maybe that was the missing ingredient. Lenin- Maybe the USSR, I mean NSSR, strong armed the other schools into rejecting you despite your superior test score and academic record so that you could lead the revolution. Or maybe fate is delivering you to the forefront in the intellectual battleground against the bourgeoise. By the way, I have a Hayek poster I made hanging on my wall, so I guess we'll be enemies next August. All jokes aside, good luck. I'm pretty sure you'll be accepted by one of the schools you're waiting on.
ShamPain Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 By the way, I have a Hayek poster I made hanging on my wall, so I guess we'll be enemies next August. scan that bastard and send it to me! or, at least, take a grainy pic so i can try to replicate it on my own? i've never seen anything like that. not to go too off-topic, but Hayek is one of the few thinkers that i respect despite the fact that his central theory has been mostly proven wrong by history. and, FWIW, and from what i can tell (FWICT?) i think New School would be a nice place to be. the copious amount of intellectual freedom alone is appealing.
thebends1996 Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 NSSR is a very interesting place to say the least. I was enrolled in their urban policy program (Milano Graduate School), but left after one semester. At that time, the Graduate Faculty and Milano shared the building. From what I remember, the Graduate Faculty had a pretty high attrition rate at the time. I know of more than a few people who left due to financial reasons, lack of resources for graduate students, and, though it might seem implausible, a lack of acceptance of free thought (for those outside of a critical theory or post modern viewpoint). Now, if this your cup of tea, I say go for it. This is especially true if you want to teach outside of the U.S. because the place is highly regarded internationally. However, if you want a job stateside, you will want to really evaluate this option thoroughly. Be prepared for a whole lot of Habermas!
lenin333 Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 I have a Greek soon to be you know what, so being Stateside isn't my destination... so to speak.

I'll see if I can scan it. You can buy a Hayek poster online, but it would require you to donate money to an ultra-conservative organisation. I don't know if you can say Hayek's central theory has been proven wrong. There are a lot of holes in Sachs' study.
Niels Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 Yes, it's true. My housemate had a Hayek poster that was sent to him from some right-wing group with too much money on their hands. Also, why would you be interested in NSSR and have a poster of Hayek unless for obvious parody?
ordinonuovo Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 I don't live in the US, and I would be careful to accept the view that the international reputation of the NSSR is better than that in the US. It's comparative advantage comes from its unique history and non-orthodox(ie leftist) approach in the sciences, but unless a particular university abroad has similar tendencies to look favorably upon such work, I don't think it applies that foreign institutions of higher education will look more positively upon the NSSR than domestic ones.

Also, why would you be interested in NSSR and have a poster of Hayek unless for obvious parody? lol, I actually didn't apply to the NSSR, although I would LOVE be at a school where everybody disagreed with me. I actually considered applying, but figured I wouldn't be able to find a professor to work with, and their funding is terrible. I was just checking this thread because the NSSR intrigues me. I don't know what to make of the program or the school.
VaclavHavel Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Did everyone who applied to the NSSR Ph.D. already have an M.A.? I understood that to be a requirement. Maybe I would have received better funding had I ignored that rule...

inigo_montoya Posted March 27, 2008 Posted March 27, 2008 I got an acceptance to the PhD program at The New School. I've been offered 50% tuition scholarship. I really appreciate the offer, and I respect the program, but the private tuition rate and NYC living expenses feel a little cost-prohibitive.

I've got nothing to say about the topic, but I just had to say that you picked a great name. I had a prof put the entire "battle of wits" at the end of a symbolic logic exam.

Niels Posted April 5, 2008 Posted April 5, 2008 God, NSSR is SO SLOW! I called last Tuesday. The secretary told me I was in and my file was being sent "back to admission" so they gauge some sort of financial offer (a pitiful one, I imagine). We're getting really close to April 15....
Niels Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 You believe these fools have still not told me officially? For Christ sake, I live in NYC too so it's not "in the mail." BTW, I heard that NSSR offers something like $44K a year for full-time profs. NOT an enticing offer. I would imagine many of them leave.
