  1. Sartori was good. I get the sense that my course is focused on older works as Acemoglu is not included in my reading list.
  2. I should have been more clear. They give us a list (a monster), but I cannot purchase all of the books. Therefore I have to get the most bang for the buck. I think that Steinmo is on my list, but I might just read it from the library. I am interested in opinions on volumes such as Oxford's Comparative Politics Compendium that just came out, though that one is 180 bucks.
  3. I am almost through my core course in comparative politics and will take my comp in May or August. I am interested to see what others thought would be essential texts to own, not just read. I have a lot already, but I am looking for edited volumes such as Comparative Historical Analysis in the Social Sciences by Mahoney and Rauschmeyer. I am going to buy the new Comparative Politics by Lichbach, but are there any other suggestions? Here are some of the texts that I already have and have read: Olson - Logic of Collective Action Schumpeter - CSD Kingdon - Agendas Huntington - Political Order; The Third Wave Horowitz - Ethnic Groups & Conflict Moore - Origins Anderson - Imagined Communities Tarrow - Power in Movement Polanyi - The Great Transformation Neustadt - Presidential Power Tsebelis - Nested Games Putnam - Making Democracy Work Gellner - Nations & Nationalism Lijphart - Patterns of Democracy
  4. Here is a little diddy on your situation: So you wanted t'go t'grad school, Thought you had a shot, So you threw your apps in the pool, But random chance decided your lot. One question might now remain, Utility or Prospect? Which theory best fits your domain, Free MA or self-respect? [i realize that the last line might not fit and the opposition is pretty crude, but hell, it rhymes.] Good Luck at Yale!
  5. Man, I would run to GMU. I got lucky and got into Toronto with a PhD offer but my back up was a 2 year MA economics at GMU. How can you go wrong with Cowen, Caplan, Kling, Roberts, and Hanson??? Not to mention their Nobels...well just one now.
  6. Some administrative error, huh? To my mind, the dark dungeon of decision-making will never be deciphered. I have no idea how Adcom's work. Probably never will. @LizH I don't know if they have sent yet, but if you live in the States that mail can take forever. I once sent a letter and it took 6 weeks to go from T dot to the midwest.
  7. Ph.D student in Political Science Comparative/IR
  8. Letter of admissions for Ph.D. Finally, a place to call home.
  9. I got my official letter in the mail today. No word on funding so I assume that it is a dead letter. Too bad.
  10. Re: Quarex I think I know what was wrong with my applications. My transcripts didn't show almost all of my political science courses and my statement didn't stress how I was focused on such. I will end up graduating with an MA with 7 courses in Political Science which would be double the number of credits needed for the degree. But my transcript only showed 2 courses. Others from my program have done the same. Failed once then after the transcript was complete they succeeded. As for funding... well my situation is getting stranger by the day.
  11. This is great advice from PhD's you know are real. See how it jibes with what Realist and Another Realist say. http://orgtheory.wordpress.com/category/grad-school-rulz/ Additionally, this is one of my favorite sites.
  12. I asked if mine might be considered for funding. They said no. Let's hope though.
  13. I have thought of that. They say on the website that deferments are not allowed. But can't hurt to ask.
  14. Georgetown - $0 with a chance of rain. Complete Failure - 100%
  15. Did anyone apply to a joint program? Anyone heard from their joint MA? This is my funding hope.
  16. Zephyr, Check your email attached to this site. Sincerely, Lenin
  17. It is interesting... Mearsheimer's article "Back to the Future" is in my opinion nutz. Maybe that is my post hoc observation. But advocating a Nuclearized Germany doesn't seem to be good IR.
  18. My friend got in too. We are both masters students at U of T. He seems to think that he also got a TA ship. Where are all of you coming from? Where are your MA's from? Or are you doing MA in the PhD streams?
  19. I got into Georgetown... its got some good ratings. But is an exception? I don't know. But what if I want to teach at a place like my undergraduate institution? Maybe.
  20. I am going to go to see what the deal is. I don't know how many times I can read the email to try and divine if funding is a possibility. still waiting, I guess.
