newms
I have a couple questions about a CV and would appreciate some help: 1) I taught high school for a few years after finishing my undergraduate. Can I list this under 'teaching experience' on a CV, or is 'teaching experience' limited to TAing or lecturing? 2) I worked during a summer as an undergraduate in a prof's lab - mainly working on a technical aspect of the project. The work didn't lead to a publication, but would this be something I could put under 'research experience'? Thanks.
rs_nucl
1) I think it should be ok to list teaching high school students, especially if the subjects were related/necessary prepration to pursue your graduate degree . It would show case that you are comfortable or have had the experience presenting material in front of students and that you have already attained a level of proficiency in your desired concentration. 2) Most undergraduates research projects do not lead to publications. So it should not deter you from listing the research experience. Hope this helps. newms I think you have provided some excellent feedback to a number participants on this forum. If you have some time could you please review my profile. Thanks. fuzzylogician

hahahut
I see the benefit of teaching in general is having the experience of construct and present arguments in a cogent way. When I worked in lab during my undergraduate, I sometimes would realize I was not answering a question in the best approach halfway through. But I have friends who could give a very logical step-by-step procedure without spending anytime planning. I think that is a reflection of the underlying cognitive ability. I agree, but I was wondering if teaching experience on the CV was limited to tertiary level teaching experience. I'm glad to know its not:)
DrFaustus666
Hi Newms, I've taught CS (of all things, even though I have no CS degree at all!) in non-credit 5-day-courses (Intro to Computer Concepts, Intro to C programming, Intro to Java Programming, Relational DB Design) etc., to adults ... and I absolutely plan to put that into my "teaching experience" CV ... as well as the one year I taught junior high (!), which was probably before most people on this forum were born . I don't know how such experience will be received, of course, but I'm working on the theory that anything is better than nothing. John
