ozmusicbird Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 Hi folks has anyone heard anything more from the good people at the NYU Music Department? I personally think that the "mid March" date on the GSAS website for starting to post decisions is somewhat bogus - you only have to look at the results page at gradcafe to see that many other departments have already provided definitive responses to their applicants. So - good or bad ... has anyone heard from them yet?
SuzR Posted March 14, 2008 Posted March 14, 2008 I still haven't heard anything, but I think I'll call them when it gets to 'late March' (which I've decided is about a weeks time!) My worry is that they have/will mail rejections & email acceptances or they'll let the accepted ppl know a while before the rejected...and given the small number of people who get in, they won't neccesarrily be gradschoolcafe posters. I just hope the mail service is working quickly atm!
caribou Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I got a phone call from one of the profs in late-February saying that I was waitlisted. I haven't gotten anything else though (email, letter) and a friend of mine who has also applied has still to get anything. I was told that they'd already made offers and I guess they're expecting them to be accepted because I was told that if I accept elsewhere, they 'understood.' I also got an email from Columbia (rejected- I saw the inquiry on another forum).

I'd heard Columbia's funding was such that admin issues had them only offer slots to people they were SURE would say yes (they had two available this year).
caribou Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Thanks! I think they called because i've been in contact with them for awhile (few months). Also, I had gone down to 'visit' aka interview with them. The prof that ended up calling me (I think he did it on the sly- does that even make sense?) seemed to just not want me to be waiting on tentherhooks. I'm guessing they've made their decisions already, as he told me that they were waiting to hear back from some people, but it does seem odd that there hasn't been any formal offer/rejection/notice at all.
SuzR Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I was in contact with one of the profs & interviewed etc and have heard nothing... Anyone guna phone them to ask? Please post asap if you do!
ozmusicbird Posted March 19, 2008 Author Posted March 19, 2008 I too was in contact with a Prof @ NYU and last December flew from the land of Oz in order to go see the department in person (not easy!). Haven't heard anything from now and even with the 2 weeks it takes to get mail from the US, I am guessing that someone would have emailed me if I had made the cut. I suppose my rejection letter will arrive eventually but I am not holding my breath. Shame - but what can you do? Congrats to Caribou for getting Princeton - it is meant to be an awesome program! May I ask what your area of interest is/where you did undergrad etc?? Are you from the US? good luck to everyone - keep morale up (peppermint tea should help with any ulcers starting to form!...or was that on the other music forum??)
SuzR Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I called the NYU musicology dept and the person I spoke to said she didn't know admissions details, ie. whether I've been rejected...but letters will be sent out in the next two weeks. I'm not completely assuming rejection just yet, as there's a (tiny!) chance the people admitted last month might've declined...but I'll post on here when I get my letter, as I assume I'll get it before all of you waiting for mail to make it's way to places like Australia!
caribou Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I went to undergrad in Canada, but am doing graduate work (MFA) right now in the US. I study continental philosophy, social aesthetics, and cultural history in contemporary improvisation (I perform too). What about everyone else? What are your areas? Also, a friend of mine just heard from UCLA yesterday...I know it's not part of this topic, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyhow.
ozmusicbird Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 Hey we should have all done this sooner! It is nice knowing people's backgrounds etc. So...about me: Australian, did undergrad here, BA in English and Philosophy and BMus in Musicology and violin performance. Honours 1 in Musicology (we follow the UK system). Am into American orchestral composers, issues of identity and nationhood, the split from the 2nd Viennese School...etc Also like post-tonal theory etc. On a completely different note (say a D#) I am also currently working on issues of contemporary performance practice of the Bach Cantatas.
SuzR Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Rejection letter from NYU arrived today, postmarked 27th & letter dated 25th. I'm guessing they were all sent out together for those of u still waiting. Ironically my mom called me with the news when I was standing outside some of NYU's buildings meeting a friend! If anyone knows how many people got accepted or any info on the accepted people (particularly if they're on here!) I'd be interested to know some details.
