Curious12345 Posted October 2, 2010 Posted October 2, 2010 Who is applying and where? I want to know what programs people have actually checked out that seem to fit the ticket when it comes to NG...I think people know what I mean when I say that. I'm definitely going for (in no order): USC UCLA UCD UCB These programs I've checked out and they fit what I feel has a good fit for me Maybe: U of M - went there...not as conceptual friendly as I'd like...but awesome package (8K a semester + full Apple setup) Stanford - still yet to visit, emailed for a meeting, got told to go to an info session (hate those) UCSD

I'm in Minneapolis and went to MCAD and have known people who went to the U for their MFA in Painting. The U of M and MCAD have always been more conceptually/design friendly than toward figurative artists. That's why I don't want to go to either for my MFA. Minneapolis is more accepting of small to medium scale work - design / conceptual paintings, illustration, installations, and collaborative projects. It's hard to show at galleries with any other kind of work as it doesn't "fit" in. There are a couple of figurative galleries but they cost a bit to exhibit and you get in based on who you know. And even then - it's more surreal, what Minneapolis calls "edgy", illustrative work that is "sellable". Minneapolis definitely has a large arts community but it is really behind. There's nothing interesting coming out of here. All the good artists end up moving to NY. After showing at a few galleries in town - that's it. Where do you go from there? Studios aren't very big. I'd say about 6 feet by 10 feet (maybe 12 feet). They are like cubicles so the walls are short. It's hard to work on large pieces. Some of the studios vary a little bit in size. My walls were short like that as undergrad and had to work on half of my large pieces, then roll it up and work on the other half and couldn't see what I was working on initially. I'm curious what size the studios are at Yale and Columbia - I've asked on here a couple times but no one has responded about it? I was told SMFA has studios about 10 x 10 feet, which is small. But don't know how high the walls/ceilings are. I don't want to go to a school that has such small studios that I have to compromise my work. I don't know about the other schools you mentioned.. U of M is an okay school and I'd definitely say conceptual friendly - as Minneapolis is. If you do conceptual / design/ illustrative painting then you'll do fine in Minneapolis. Figurative...I say go to East or West Coast.

If you mean the University of Michigan, they are very conceptual, and quite open in general.

Curious12345 Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 Just curious, why isn't SFAI on your list? I graduated (BFA) from SFAI, need a change of scenery, I do love SFAI though. ...and I meant University of Michigan!
yael Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Have you considered CCA and Cal Arts? UCBerkeley's department is getting smaller - Squeak Carnwath just retired. UC Davis still has a good program. USC's ranking is way down - I am not sure what happened (or didn't) there. SAIC - should be considered.

CCA doesn't really have that attractive of financial packages from what I've seen. Kind of trying to stay away from the for profit private schools. I'm excited about UCD, I really hope I get in there, and that is weird you hear that about USC, I've heard the exact opposite. Well not about ranking, but about the program being good / up and coming. SAIC is in the same boat as CCA for me, the UCs just have WAY too good of stuff going on to be ignored, plus I've had some bad experiences in Chicago and haven't found the people to be that nice. Oh and for Cal Arts, I sat down with Allen Sekula and he told me to apply and to mention his name, but again, I'm not looking to add another 60K in debt to my already big pile. My final list, which is a mix of photo and new genres (mostly NG): UCLA UCD UCSB UCSD RISD Parsons Uni of Washington Columbia Edited December 29, 2010 by racuerex
colbz Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 It's my first year applying too! I am terribly anxious...very worried that I won't get accepted anywhere...I really hope not to go through this again.I think my friends and family and professors, etc have about had it with listening to my obsession, so I'll tell everyone my list too: Tyler Hunter PAFA University of Delaware UT Austin SVA Rutgers SAIC CCNY Purchase college Possibly: Claremont Graduate U., U. California, Irvine I've got everything well underway..already sent in my apps and portfolios for both UT Austin and SAIC! I'm finding the biggest stress right now is that I stupidly didn't request transcripts until Dec. 23rd, and I am stressing badly that my professors will get my rec. letters in on time! I'm freaking out a bit because UT Austin is due on Jan 5th, and my transcripts may not have even left VA yet...I'm getting prepared to make a 4 hour round trip to drive to my college, beg for the transcripts, and pay to overnight them to Texas if that's what it's going to take. Good luck with the UCSD app...I am sure it will come soon, I know the SAIC portfolio info wasn't emailed to me until about 24 hours after I sent in the app. My first year applying. very anxious! Here's my list: UCLA UCSD UCI CalArts Hunter Columbia Yale Anyone upload their portfolio to the UCSD website yet? I'm still waiting for them to send me the link and password to their online portfolio system...

I got pretty much everything done, this is my second time around...I feel like I have my crap way more together than I did my first time.
firewalkwithme Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Thanks did the same. Their portfolio site is kinda confusing. I'm done just gotta finish their portfolio. GOOD LUCK TO ALL! syzygy Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 A question for anyone applying to Columbia but when they specify for the images to be 1280 x 1024 pixels, do they mean that they have to be horizontal or can they be 1024 x 1280 too? I emailed them a while ago but they ignored me.

I emailed them a while ago but they ignored me. seems they want images of the regular display resolution. if you do it the other way the height will still be scaled down to 1024 when they view it. i would display vertical images with 1024 height dimensions and fill horizontal space with black bg.

Ya, just size it to whatever the lower number is over the size requirements and you will be fine.
sndnvsn Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Hello I applied for New Genres as well. I applied to: CCA -interviewed SFAI -interviewed MassArts -interviewed UCSD CM -rejected UCI CalArts - rejected I'm wishing I would of applied to a few more places such as UCLA and NYU. Also, if I don't get decent funding offers, I might just hold out until next year. What is your work like? Best of luck to you and everyone on this site. Who is applying and where? Different uses of photography mixed with a bunch of performance stuff...I'd also like to say a healthy mix of dry conceptual and institutional critique.

bretter Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Hi, I applied for New Genres at Columbia and SFAI (low res) and sculpture at Yale - rejected at Yale, into SFAI and waiting to hear from Columbia, although according to the other forum Columbia made calls for interviews yesterday and today so perhaps that ship has sailed! I am excited about SFAI though!

Regarding Columbia: I haven't heard anything either, so perhaps that ship has indeed sailed. Good luck!

I dunno, while I was at SFAI they seemed to be dumping money into the school left and right.
mytomato Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 (edited) Hi, kimpusity! Could you please tell me when you got your acceptance letter from ITP? I'm still waiting for the news and now I'm dying from not hearing anything. Kudos for the amazing result of yours! Edited March 17, 2011 by mytomato
kimpusity Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Thanks! I am applying through Fulbright, so the e-mail didn't arrive to me directly to me. But it seems to have been sent today. kimpusity Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Hi, What do you think is better for New Genres: CMU or RISD? I have to decide between the two and it is being awfully hard... any help would be appreciated!
truthbetold Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 depends on which flavor of new genres you mean... look at what the alumni are doing and see which is more the direction you see yourself heading. kimpusity 1
