How can we be certain that the Javits office received our fellowship packages? I sent mine first class, but I want to make sure they received all the materials and nothing was missing. Do they typically send a confirmation email?

They are supposed to send a confirmation via snailmail within two weeks of the deadline (by October 15th). But posts last year suggest it didn't come until November, and that they weren't particularly eager to answer everyone's calls and emails asking for confirmation. I was worried about it too, but there's really no point--what could I do even if they didn't get it?

I used certified mail as proof that I mailed it by the postmarked date, as a way to track my package, and also as a way to get a copy of the signature of the person who received my package. A few days after I mailed the package, I got an email from the USPS saying my package was received and signed by a D. Butler and they provided a copy of the signature. It's been over 2 weeks and I haven't received a confirmation from Javits, but just in case they claim they never received it, I have proof from the USPS that I mailed it and it was received.

The few extra dollars gave me peace of mind.

That worries me, I have a tracking confirmation as well, but I still have not received any email confirming receipt of my materials and it is nearly an entire week after you posted your email confirmation. Have other people received confirmation as well by this point - Nove 4? I emailed the Javits office but I am doubtful they will be able to reply given the volume of applicants.

I still haven't received a confirmation from them...I'm curious if anyone else is in a similar position?

Don't think it's a fluke. I also received an email on November 2:

Dear Applicant,

This is to inform you that your state plan/Application has been received by the Application Control Center.

PR/Award Number : P170A110699

CFDA Number : 84.170A

Title : Jacob K. Javits Fellows(NEW)

Application for : XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

PR/Award Number assigned on : Tue, Nov 02, 2010 04:29 PM (Washington, DC time)

Please refer to the PR/Award Number shown above in all correspondence concerning this application. Please print this email for your records. Please do not reply to this email.

Should you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at (202) 245-6288.

I suggest calling that number to see if they're still going through applications.

Thanks! I called the number, and they confirmed they had received my materials. I didn't even have to wait to speak to someone.

I finally found a phone that can dial the number 6 (long story) and called. The lady I spoke with was very polite, checked all my info, and confirmed that my materials were in (and gave me a code number, but I have no idea what that's for). I told her I didn't get a postcard or email and she said many of them haven't gone out yet. I think they might divide them up by region and deal with them that way (I have no data to back this up except that she asked for my state of residence before she asked for my name).

Totally irrelevant side note: during this conversation, I was picturing the US Dept. of Education as one tiny old lady sitting at a card table in someone's basement, surrounded by musty folders, 12 cats, and a card catalogue . . . and waiting for the typewriter to "warm up."

Super late posting this, but I too received a confirmation email, on Nov. 4.

When are we supposed to hear from them?

I haven't received all my W2 forms yet (grrr . . . ) and I have doubts that I'll get them today. As such, I called the Javits office to ask whether I could get an extension, but the recording that answered said that all the "principle applicants" (?) have been notified by phone already. It also said that those who were not chosen will get letters soon, and if you did not receive a call from the committee, you should assume that "your application was unsuccessful." Erm, all right. I'm guessing then that the FAFSA part is just a formality.

This bites.

I just called the number provided on the website to verify this information. The message says that all alternates and principle candidates for the "FY 2010" fellowship have been notified. So, this may be good news for those of us -- and I'm assuming that means you too, lechatgris -- who applied for the FY 2011.

That would be nice, although the message didn't say that the last time I called. I haven't been able to contact a real person to verify, though. I'm game for keeping hope alive, I guess.

Feel free to check again, but I called a minute ago to make sure I heard properly. The message says the applicants were notified for the 2010 competition. Regardless, I have yet to receive any confirmation that they even received my application, so it may not matter all that much in my case. I had some luck getting a non-automated response when I e-mailed a change of address notification. Maybe give that a shot?

You might send them an e-mail to let them know the website is down, but I'm guessing it probably won't matter if this part of your application is a day or two late.

By the way, you can fill out a FAFSA without W-2s. Just estimate it, then fill out a correction online later when you do your taxes. It's easy to do so and you can correct your FAFSA as many times as you need to.

I just checked too and she said 2010. Whew! Good luck, everyone. I'm guessing we won't hear anything from them until the last week of February at the earliest...?

I applied for the Javits last year (concurrently with my PhD apps) and didn't get it. I hadn't heard anything from them by end of March, so I sent an e-mail inquiry and found out that I was "not recommended for funding." I was also told that the people receiving the fellowship had been notified on March 15. So, judging by last year, we shouldn't expect to hear anything til around the middle of March.

I beefed up my application and am re-trying this year... hopefully will get different results! Good luck to everyone!

hi all- did you notice on the javits web site, under funding status, they list the number of 2011 fellowships? i'm pretty sure that wasn't updated a few days ago but maybe i'm imagining things...

I wouldn't be surprised if the number of fellowships turns out to be higher than that, though. It says there was funding for 27 new fellowships last year, and if you look at the list of new 2010 fellows, there were actually 67. I received the Javits in August, after being on an alternate list, which seems like it may actually be pretty common... I know that sometimes fellows graduate, get other fellowships, or drop out, thus freeing up more spots over the summer months...But I honestly don't understand how it works...

I think you're right. I remember checking the "Awards" section a month or so ago, and they hadn't yet added the 2010 fellows! So something is progressing. I'm definitely getting anxious about the decisions.

A little late to be thinking about this, but I never got a confirmation that my application was received. Did anyone else not get a confirmation?
