NewEmpiric Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 I'm primarily interested in cognitive and affective control, and I'm looking for programs/labs to apply to. I have the cognitive control labs set already, but the affective labs are harder to find. Do any of you know labs that focus on affective control, affective neuro, and/or emotion regulation? I'm targeting Davidson (Wisconsin), Wager (Colorado), and possibly Egner (Duke). Any others?
lucere Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 It sounds like you might be a good fit for Florin Dolcos, who recently joined the Illinois (UIUC) faculty. I assume he will be looking for new students given that he doesn't have any right now... I don't know what's going on with him transferring his site over or whatever, but his work seems to be summarized here: Dolcos Lab . He's into the effects of emotion on cognition, and the neuro correlates thereof. I'm primarily interested in cognitive and affective control, and I'm looking for programs/labs to apply to. neuroJ Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 I know this is general advice that you have probably heard before, but I think it's a really important (and it took me forever to learn to do this): To find more labs, the best thing to do is read papers written by people whose work you are interested in (in your case Davidson, Egner and Wager). It will help you in writing your SOP and from the common citations in work you find interesting, you will be able to discover people who you might also want to work with.
pospsy Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 How about Matthew Lieberman or Naomi Eisenberger at UCLA? NewEmpiric Posted October 25, 2010 Author Posted October 25, 2010 How about Matthew Lieberman or Naomi Eisenberger at UCLA? Thanks to you all for responding. Interestingly, I just discovered a researcher at Oregon, Elliot Berkman, who I think studied with Lieberman. ...good suggestion.

I'm not applying to grad school yet, but my interests are really similar to yours- although a bit tilted more to emotional dysregulation & psychiatric disorders. I've narrowed down people & places just from looking at websites, so no guarantees on all this, but I'd recommend checking out Yale (esp. Gray), WashU (esp. Braver), Vanderbilt, Pittsburgh, UC Davis (esp. Carter), UC Berkeley, Stanford (esp. Gross), and Dartmouth. Also, I have to put in a good word for Duke, as I work as an RA there and really like it. I don't know Egner's research that well, but I've heard good things about him personally, and there's a lot of research going on here along lines similar to what he studies- always good to have collaborators as well as an advisor! Let me know where all you end up looking, because I'd appreciate any more info on people doing this sort of work as well:)
neuropsych76 Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I feel kind of cool that when people mention names in neuroscience academia I know who a lot of them are Davidson and Lieberman are really nice people though. I worked in an affective neuroscience lab (or social cognitive neuroscience) and it was pretty cool. I think I like invesitgating the cognitions more than the emotional processing though.
LuckyCat Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 You might want to check out Emily Falk, who is starting this year in the Communications dept at UMichigan. Her advisor was Matt Lieberman, too. Although her focus isn't primarily affective, it's pretty cool: communications neuroscience. Check her lab out here: http://cn.isr.umich.edu/
