Importance of research

Hi everyone, I'm new so bare with me

I'm hoping to do my graduate studies (PhD with Masters) in the states, but have noticed that pretty much all of you have extensive research experience.

As a sophomore student in Germany, Im one of the top students and have just started working as a TA for logic design, but there won't be a lot of research despite my bachelor's thesis.

In Germany, it is very rare that engineering students work while studying, as all the exams are written during the vacations.

Nevertheless, I am thinking about asking some of the professors for small tasks I could do to simply get some insight into research, thats why I would like to know what you guys did so far.
