Mocha001 Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 I just took the GRE on 22nd of Oct. Well, I was pretty disappointed. My verbal was 450 and my quantitative was 780. By the way, I am not a native speaker. But, I am not a natural science major. I am communication major. My focus will be statistical research in communication. I was scoring close to 600 on the prep. But, the real test was harder than I thought. Now, I want to improve my score to at least 550. I want to keep my record for 5 years until I apply for PhD. I never want to study for this test again, and I do not think I will do well on the new GRE. What should I do to improve my score 100 pt? Should I just keep memorizing words? I have studied every possible study book, but still I am not good at verbal section.
DrFaustus666 Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Hi Uram The conventional advice (on this forum and elsewhere) for the current GRE, is memorize memorize memorize. The Barron's book has 3500 words. It would take a year or more to learn that many words from scratch, but if you do -- a score in the 700's for verbal is almost assured -- providing you also study reading comprehension and "analogy strategy" --- send me a personal message on this topic if you want to, I am a native speaker and tutor English. So, bottom line, keep learning words. I think the new GRE will be EASIER, maybe a lot easier, because of the lack of analogies and antonyms. Good luck, John
history_PhD Posted November 9, 2010 Posted November 9, 2010 I say go with flash cards; either make your own or buy the. I bought both the Barron ones and the Kaplan ones from Amazon. Those helped me a lot; I increased my verbal score over 100 points. Also, as long as the questions change based on your past correct or incorrect answers, it is really important to get the first few questions correct. I think that the CAT is going away though?
