deepened Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 After contacting my application status, I received below email from the phd advisor. How do you guys think about this situation? Is mine just under review now or is there any possibility for me to be in the program? I am still waiting but heard no response yet. Thank you. ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear xxx: Your application looks good! Some of the committee members recommended your acceptance at xxx.! I'll get back with you soon. This doesn't interfere with my work. I'm very excited to tell you the good news. Thank you.
KingdomForAHorse Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 It looks like a decision has not been made yet. Be patient. (I know that is easier said than done.)
deepened Posted March 21, 2008 Author Posted March 21, 2008 Thank you for your advice. It seems that the result is going to be anounced very soon, but, to wait is, as usual, not very easy.
Tritonetelephone Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 I don't think he/she would have mentioned that some of the committee members recommended your admittance if he/she didn't strongly believe that you're in. *Maybe* you could be waitlisted, but it sounds to me like you have the acceptance and just need to wait for the official announcement. At the very least, he/she will look like a total jerk for leading you on if you end up rejected.
firecolon Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 He/she told you "I'm very excited to tell you the good news." If you actually end up being rejected, you should appeal the decision on the grounds that a professor already implied that you were accepted.
Minnesotan Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 The "good news" could just mean that some of the committee members recommended him. I would not think this is grounds for an appeal. It is, however, a jerky thing to say, if you're not sure of the results.
deianeira Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 What did you say in the email that you sent? I am going to compose one myself and want to know what others are saying.
deepened Posted March 22, 2008 Author Posted March 22, 2008 My thesis advisor also say that it seems I am in but they are making money for me (believe or not). Your comnments really help me. The deadline of my program was Jan.15 so it is comparably late than others, so anyway I should wait but it is really hard. To Minnesotan: what do you mean by "It is, however, a jerky thing to say, if you're not sure of the results."? Do you mean that I should just wait without asking to the department unless I am sure? Anyway, I will need to follow any decision they make. To deianeira: what I wrote is really a simple question when I can know the result from the department.
Minnesotan Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 I meant that the person who told you it was "good news" had better be sure it was an acceptance, or else he's kind of being a jerk by leading you on. It reminds me of a girl I dated in junior high.
TMP Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 Did you contact your potential advisor or the DGS? I want to compose one for myself next week in case that letter still hasn't come in...
deepened Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 To Minnesotan: I got you. It looks like that, so that's the reason I can't still be sure about what she said to me. To ticklemepink: She is just a MS & PhD advisors, not the potential advisor. With the faculty I expected to be a good dissertation advisor, I just contacted about three months ago and got a kind of neutral response (I am intrigued to your research, and will look yours with other committees). The school finishes the spring break by this week, so I hope I can know the final decision in next week..!!!
deepened Posted March 26, 2008 Author Posted March 26, 2008 I called and talked with the person who responded to me by referring mine looks good. But, today, she said that I was declined and continued to say that she don't know why I was rejected and it seems because of the high competitivity. I feel I am very much pissed now.
