Franc Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 Hi everyone, I'm thinking about applying to a UK university for doctoral program in Bible/Hebrew Bible but I'm not really familiar with UK schools. I would also love a school that can offer scholarships...full tuition scholarship would be ideal. Could someone help me with some suggestions. I would earnestly appreciate it! I am particularly interested in Hebrew Bible and have a bias for the biblical legal corpora. I find the Deuteronomic Code interesting. However I also have interest in prophetic literature and others. I love rhetorical criticism and historical exegesis. I have a background in theology. I would like a school that studies scripture as scripture and not from an overt doctrinal standpoint. Thanks and hoping for some kind responses!
xypathos Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 Are you a US citizen? If so, scholarships are going to be ridiculously hard to secure. The UK schools that are approved for federal loans would much rather you take out loans than receive scholarship money. The US citizens that get scholarships tend to be the ones that had such competitive applications that they're also applying to HYPetc. A UK school will also limit your ability to come back to the US and teach. Many of the UK schools have a reputation for doctrinal bias, so it's more important to focus on who would be supervising your work. Oxford and Cambridge skirts some of this, but again it comes down to who your supervisor is. sacklunch Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 I don't know exactly what it means, but I suspect the poster is conservative leaning, which is of course why they want to head to the U.K.! No coursework, no teaching, will allow one to keep their beliefs protected. Luckily, doing such a program, as a U.S. citizen, all but ensures zero academic job opportunities (esp. permanent ones).
