Political Science - Fall 2011 Cycle

Thanks, Purled! I just checked, but I don't see any link like that. No news is good news? I guess I'll just keep checking?

I received an email notifying me that a decision was available the morning after the link was added to my application, so I guess just keep checking your inbox. No news isn't definitely good news, but at least it isn't bad news. It's just no news. I've pretty much chosen to assume that my own lack of decisions is an indication of being wait-listed or hotly debated over - mostly so that I don't go completely nuts trying to predict outcomes I can no longer affect. No rejection = still in the running. I hope!

Man, it looks like it's going to be another 2-3 weeks (maybe even more?) of waiting until I get any more results. I want to know what the deal is so I know if I should start planning a vacation to reward myself or start looking for opportunities to publish and other stuff to improve my application for next time.

I had to email them several times because my GRE and transcripts were listed as "not received." Finally, last week, my GRE scores were listed as received (about 6 weeks after I sent them), but I was told that the admissions people were working frantically to organize all the transcripts (I sent them 7 weeks ago!!!). They are still listed as "not received" but I was reassured that they don't need to be resent but they have not yet been processed....<_<

This makes me feel so much better. Especially since the admissions secretary was seemingly not in today. I'm glad I'm not the only one having GRE issues with them.

To the Yale peeps: did you find out your status from the GSAS page with the giant 'CLICK HERE TO CHECK YOUR STATUS' link that goes back to your app? Did something new magically appear in y our application page to tell you your status?

I was notified via email... I just checked the applyyourself page and nothing's changed there.

Regarding Yale...

There wasn't anything posted on my application. (I looked.) Just a friendly email from a professor.

I can't totally understand or explain why I was admitted. I am no "super star"! I would describe myself as a "non-traditional" candidate. I have very few poli sci courses and only one college math class. In terms of the Middle East, my background in area studies and language is strong...great references but none from poli sci professors. My quant GRE is 50 points below the average at Yale. My gpa and verbal GRE are very strong, and I have spent considerable time studying in the Middle East. I also put a lot of effort into my SOP and my writing sample which was a chapter from my thesis.

I only applied to schools with Middle East specialists. That meant my list of applications was very quirky! Chicago and Yale were the only top twenty in my list. I was rejected from Chicago (I assume) and accepted at Yale.

Congrats. You must be one of everyone's top choices! Like the blonde in the game theory bit in A Beautiful Mind

My girlfriend would tell you I'm more like John Nash (not that I'm anywhere near his brilliance, but rather in terms of being wrapped up in my own research and ideas). Also, I did receive a rejection from Michigan. In at Stanford, Duke and Yale.

Edit: She also claims that I'm neurotic (just like Nash). She reaches that bizarre conclusion using the premise that I spend way too much time on TGF.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly are the average GRE quant/verbal for Yale?

Then you just hit a clutch home run. Well played my friend, your cycle is over.

I once heard that the average quant score at Yale was 730 (can't remember where) and that is the figure I had in my mind. However, when I checked on the NRC data released last fall, it lists 753 as the average. I don't know about verbal.

While there is certainly something to be said for averages, I think expectations vary based on research interests. If you do qually comparative, I think the required Q GRE is lower compared to that for aspiring methodologists. However, you better have lots of time in country and good language ability (which it seems you have).

Congrats!

I claim the Rochester admit. But there is still hope! In the immortal words of Justin Bieber, never say never.

Congrats, Oasis! I had resigned myself to reapplying next year, so although this likely signals that will be necessary, it doesn't hurt as much as it might have a few weeks ago.

Anyone want to claim the rejection? I haven't heard anything yet.

In at Rochester as well. Email from Tasos Kalandrakis, some basic info on funding.

Extremely excited, this is going to be a tough offer to turn down! I have to decide between them and UCLA.

For formal theory, I would think Rochester's the obvious choice. Even if you liked UCLA better, Rochester tends to place formal theorists very well, as hiring committees immediately look at Rochester grads when hiring for formal theory.

Congrats to all the Rochester admits! Hopefully I'll see you there in 2012...

Unless I'm mistaken, we haven't heard from at least four of your schools yet. Don't count yourself out now!

On the waitlist for Rochester.

This is pretty surprising. Umich is a great school though, so I hope you're not too worried about it. This ends my lingering pipe-dream that I might have made their waitlist.

@Tufnel and wtncffts. I appreciate the encouragement! NYU's really the only school left amongst the remaining four that I feel I have any chance at. My fit there is good (probably the best of any school, actually), but they've struck me as more competitive than some of the schools I've been de facto rejected from. My only hope is that their extremely high average GRE-Q scores relative to other political science departments reflect an unreasonably and unjustifiably high focus on GRE scores in admissions! If that ends up being the case, maybe I'll have a chance. But as of this point, my focus has shifted from the now minute probability of success this year to planning for next year's applications.

On a lighter note:

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that's kind of odd. Michigan and UCLA were my top two, so I am a happy girl regardless.
