HistoryChica Posted March 26, 2008 Posted March 26, 2008 I applied for the CLIR (Council on Library and Information Resources) fellowship for dissertation research in original sources earlier this year... I'm now anxiously awaiting their decision, which should be made by the end of March. Anyone else apply for this? Heard anything yet? I hate spending my Spring break freaking out about funding!

I know this is an old post so I don't know if you're active anymore, but when did you end up hearing? I've applied for next year and I'm finding all sorts of information on notification dates, etc, for the Fulbright but not this. Did you end up being awarded a fellowship?

Hi Caro Ellen, Someone on another page said that they already received notification, but I haven't heard anything back. Have you? http://academicjobs.wikia.com/wiki/Dissertation_fellowships#CLIR.2F_Mellon_Fellowship
puentej Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Hi, I applied for this fellowship and haven't heard anything. They say in the website that all announcements will be made on April 1st. Any confirmation that that person actually got a notification?

Any confirmation that that person actually got a notification? No, so now I'm assuming that the person listed the notification under the wrong fellowship heading. Good luck!
igotmeanewname Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I just received my rejection email. Good luck to all!
judehermes Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Well, I have applied for this. Anyone else?
benjybrentwood Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I applied for this one too. I haven't seen any info on how many applications they usually get-- does anyone else know?
Darus Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 I applied for CLIR too. 488 applications received last year (source: Academic Wikia. com)
Darus Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Has anyone heard anything? I think CLIR will send offers sometime this week, if they haven't already done so... Please post if you hear something.
judehermes Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Really? I heard that they email the offers between March 29 and April 1. Where did you hear about this earlier date?
kaguyahime Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Hmm...on the application it says April 2 is the notification date. (Nice that one fellowship at least commits to a date instead of torturing us). Is there something I don't know???
Darus Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 (edited) Well yes, April 2 is the date they publicly announce the fellowship recipients on their website, but I assume that people who actually get the award hear much earlier and don't learn it from their website. The SSRC also announces the names in early May on their website, but usually email the offers around mid April. I heard about the earlier date from someone in my department who received the CLIR fellowship last year and said he was notified in early-mid March (although I didn't ask that person about the exact date). Also, last year someone here http://academicjobs....llon_Fellowship claimed to get a notification on March 3. For some reason, people decided that that person posted his/her add under a wrong fellowship, but I am not sure about it actually. I am reading on Academic Wikia. com ONLY about people receiving rejections between March 29 and April 1. Judehermes, do you have any firm knowledge about someone who actually got an offer from CLIR during that time span? Edited March 5, 2012 by Darus

Darus Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Darus, I have not. I know someone in my department who got a rejection email last year on March 29. Okay. Thanks! My theory about the CLIR procedures is that they email the offers by mid March, then send the rejections by late March, and finally make an announcement on April 2. I can't be certain, of course...

Darus Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Thanks! It's great to have as much information as possible. Good luck! Good luck to you too, judehermes, and to everyone! And please don't forget to post a note here, when you get the offer! :-)
kaguyahime Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 (edited) Hello CLIR people, I just noticed this: http://academicjobs....owships_2012-13 I think this is the source you referred to earlier, Darus? According to this (who knows how accurate), they let you know the results in time for you to accept or decline by April 2, when they make their formal announcement of recipients. I hope they wouldn't really be expecting such a quick response...I'm still waiting to hear about Fulbright, results of which are very likely to come AFTER April 2...I'm sure many of you are waiting to get other results, too... Actually, when you think about it, it makes sense that they would let the people who ARE receiving the awards know first. Because if the people who are awarded say "no," then their spot may get passed on to the people lower on the list, who will then no longer get rejections. (Sorry, I didn't express that very clearly) Edited March 7, 2012 by kaguyahime
Darus Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 Yes, that was the source I referred to, kaguyahime. What you write about the early notifications makes sense to me too. As for the CLIR's expectations for the "quick responses" from recipients, well I wish this was my problem... :-) If you get the offer, I really don't think it will be difficult to sort these issues out with the foundation. benjybrentwood Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Yeah I have a friend who got it last year and she also said she got her notification some time around march 4th or 6th.
judehermes Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Well, I haven't heard anything. So I'm going to assume I didn't get it.
kaguyahime Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Unfortunately, I think you're probably right, judehermes. Looks like I didn't either. For goodness' sake, aren't there any lurkers who have already heard back about this? Please let us know so that we can stop thinking about it!
Darus Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 (edited) Hi folks I am not greatly optimistic about this fellowship either, since only 15 people get it out of hundreds. Still, there is a good chance that this year's schedule is different from the one last year and that they haven't notified the recipients yet. I just got some new info from a friend who received an offer two years ago and she told me that CLIR emailed her (positive) on March 20. So fingers crossed. For some reason I think next week will be THE week... :-) Edited March 11, 2012 by Darus
