YLSnKSG Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Hmm..looking back at what someone posted before, looks like you might be right. I guess the main question is do we really think they will start sending out decisions as early as March 11th? 2010: March 18 & 19 (Thurs and Fri) 2009: March 22 (Sunday) 2008: March 14 & 16 (Fri and Mon) I think we could see some admissions starting today, but more likely sometime next week. While the dates are helpful, I'm really curious as to what time in the day people started getting the admit emails. Do we have any data on that? I think admissions could start today because I think there's certainly less applicants this year than in 2009 and 2010 which were record years for Kennedy. People who got ousted from the Hill because of election 2010 probably didn't have enough time to apply between the end of the election till the deadline (unless they were leaving anyway). Because I think the applicant levels are probably more in line with 2008 levels and because the deadline was much earlier this year, I think we could see a 2008 model with admits going out today and monday. Note that admits went out the week of the 11th in 2008, it was just on that Friday the 14th.
bmiller Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 u sure the applicant pool this year is smaller than 2009 and 2010? Or is that just your own speculation? Because I think I heard from someone the number of applicants this year is larger than ever. I think we could see some admissions starting today, but more likely sometime next week. Because I think I heard from someone the number of applicants this year is larger than ever. Just speculation. Don't know why it would be larger than ever this year. 1) Most of the hard core young politicos are going to be gearing up for 2012. They aren't going to want to start a MPP to take them away from the action. 2) The economy is better than in 2009 or 2010. Doesn't seem to be much economic incentive to get a $130,000 degree to prepare you for 50-60k jobs when the economy is better. 3) The idealism of the Obama effect has certainly worn off. 4) A record number of people took the GRE in 2009 (for 2010 admissions). Don't think we've seen the same level (although a comparison of GRE takers to Kennedy admits may not tell us much). In any event, I think the applicant pool will be smaller. Then again, Kennedy did push up its deadline. so maybe the app pool will be larger.
fso2k11 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I just looked it up, and last year's first board post from an admit was 3/22/2010 at 5:15pm EST, and the emails went out until 7:00pm or after. I think we're on the mark: if we don't get it today then it won't come til next Fri. I also disagree with your assumption that there are less applicants. Re: people who got ousted from the hill - good point (esp. the Democrats, who believe in public service ), but many of the Dems knew they were gonna lose, and there is a lot of hill staff turn-over in the fall anyways. I also heard from someone at the school that this is the largest MPP applicant pool they've ever had, by far. This may be attributed in part to the lack of a policy memo, which I'm sure dissuades some aspiring applicants (but maybe not the serious ones, so the effect on competitiveness might be a wash). But I'm pretty confident in my intelligence that this is a very large applicant pool. I'd love if it went back to 2008 levels and a 20% or higher acceptance rate but.....not getting my hopes up I think we could see some admissions starting today, but more likely sometime next week. Most of the hard core young politicos shot their wad in 2008, couldn't get jobs because of the economy, worked on campaigns in 2009 or 2010 and now they're burnt out. Not that I would know anything about that... And you made a comment about the deadline being earlier. I think that would help drop the # of applicants, but just like the policy memo I bet it is a wash on competitiveness because the kids who skipped the HKS app because of a policy memo requirement probably weren't serious. The kids who couldn't make the Dec. 3 deadline this year are probably the same cross section of candidates.

And yeah, at least 2 other people say that the Apps are way up, so I guess that's true. Oh well, it's been two months, I guess another couple days of waiting can't hurt. intlpolicy10 Posted March 11, 2011 Author Posted March 11, 2011 We also shouldn't forget that HKS had a greater enrollment yield in the past two years. Unfortunately, I think this means they will extend a smaller number of acceptances this year.
IdealThinker Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Wow guys you lot are really thinking about it, statistics and all! Lol it's kinda cute.
Elsa Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Wow guys you lot are really thinking about it, statistics and all! Lol it's kinda cute. Those poor people who second guess themselves and don't have your confidence, please be magnanimous to us
abogs78 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I wonder how people have so much time debating statistics when this admission decision is already out of your hands Wow guys you lot are really thinking about it, statistics and all! Lol it's kinda cute.
IdealThinker Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 It's not about second guessing, thing is I doubt statistics fits into their decision making process. One of these days the results are coming out. Lol why worry about statistics? It's cute that people are thinking about the admissions process, but really you're going to drive yourselves mad. Maybe I'm relaxed not because I'm confident in getting in, far from it, I actually think I won't. But harvard or no harvard, I'm confident enough to realise that there's more to life then harvard. I'd love the experience, to meet like minded ppl etc, nut if it doesn't happen it just means other doors will open!

In my case, I just want to receive the rejection letter to be over the waiting and focus on choosing my school. Plus, I have a friend in HKS who told me that they got this year the largest pool of applicants they've never had and that decisions were likely to be sent out in late March. Hope she's wrong.
tigereyes25 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 that's bleary news...although even if they have a larger amount of applicants, they had one whole extra month to read the applications (which were significantly shorter, given no policy memo). If you can't tell, I'm really irritated with HKS admissions right now. I love that kind of spirit. Thanks. YLSnKSG Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I hear there is a cut-off GRE score and below that is essentially a DQ. Does anyone know what the cut-off is? Does anyone think that a 4.0 on AW is a deal-breaker? Is there any truth to this?
abogs78 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 That is so not correct. My friend had a 3.0 AW and a 600V and 730Q and he got into HKS. I don't think they only look at your score. You should be fine if they believe you are a good fit for their program. I am sure you have other things that you bring to the table apart from your GRE scores. The decision is no longer in your hands so wait and be hopeful for some good news. Is there any truth to this?

I was wondering if it was true because maybe it would limit the number of applications being reviewed. Fewer apps being reviewed should mean a quicker decision.
abogs78 Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Right, then I hope your strong scores get your into HKS... My GRE scores aren't low. I was wondering if it was true because maybe it would limit the number of applications being reviewed. Fewer apps being reviewed should mean a quicker decision.
YLSnKSG Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 (edited) Right, then I hope your strong scores get your into HKS... I wouldn't call them "Strong" either. Certainly not 800V/800Q. They aren't low either. You just made an assumption I wanted to correct. That's all. Edit: I'm also not trying to be a pretentious jerk either. I just don't want to be known as the guy with a low GRE score because I asked about cutoffs. Edited March 11, 2011 by YLSnKSG
Status Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Guys, the Admission Committee is done reviewing applications. At this point, they already know the number of admitted students and applicants that are been rejected. The only thing taking so long is the determination of number of applicants that should be on the waiting lists. No need to panic, Judgment Day is upon soon. Good luck to everyone I wouldn't call them "Strong" either. Certainly not 800V/800Q. They aren't low either. You just made an assumption I wanted to correct. That's all.
