Hey, world.

First time posting, but I just spent an unreasonable amount of time reading through the forums (or fora, if you prefer), and found basically nothing about what I want to find out about.

My boyfriend has applied to the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. He has also applied to some other places, but the Social Thought program is his top choice. Since it's so important to him, and since I'm a bit of a busybody, I set about trying to find other people who might be in the same boat as him, maybe find out when to expect acceptance/rejection letters, see what other people want to study, etc. But despite the Committee's being (apparently) very highly esteemed and well-known in the world of academia, I have yet to find a single community of people on the Internet devoted to talking about it. I know the program is small, but come on, Internet, I thought you had everything.

Anyway, I guess I just wanted to send out a "Hey there" to anyone else who has applied to the Committee (I love calling it that. It makes me feel like I'm privy to some sort of underground organization), and to make a little space for people to ask questions and share information.

So. Who else out there is dying to get into this program? Have you heard back from Chicago yet? Let's all suffer through the waiting process together!

You might want to check out the Results section of TGC, there you can keep an eye on acceptances and rejections coming in...you can also search for information on past application rounds there. It might help give you an idea of about how long the program normally takes to notify those that are accepted or on the waitlist. Good luck.

Hi, I am a fellow applicant to the Committee on Social Thought and I'm applying from another one of UC's endless committees but I am as anxious as anyone to see what happens. I'm not sure how many people get accepted but I get the impression that it is typically less than five and a number who don't get accepted are offered admission to one of several MA programs at the university. Unfortunately, depending on perspective I guess, since I have an MA from the place that will not be an option for them to consider for me. Anyway, good luck to your boyfriend and you, this can be a very stressful process.

Hi! Nice to hear from you. I was also under the impression that fewer than five people tend to be admitted, which is very nerve-wracking! Do you have any idea when to expect a response from them? I looked at the results page, and it seems that in years past, people were admitted as early as mid-February and as late as mid-March. I really hope we don't have to wait until March; I'm not sure I could handle it.

Good luck to you as well!

I applied to the CST as well. I've no idea when they will be sending out acceptances/rejections, but I assume it won't be for a while. What are everyone's research areas?

My research interest is critical theory and subaltern political ideology. I think they finish up in late Feb/ early March

hahaha You TOTALLY got me falsely excited! It's okay though. I haven't heard anything yet; according to previous years we might start hearing in the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed!

woo hoo waiting! NOT. Today someone who just finished his PhD in Poli Sci @ UChicago laughed when I told him I applied to the Committee on Social Thought... I'm not really sure how to interpret that, but he's Canadian -.-

Well, the standard completion time is supposedly _very_ long for the program, so that could be it. Also, one of my friends in another doctoral program at U of C told me about some parties she'd gone to with Social Thought students, and said that they were a kind all of their own (but in a good way).

If I remember correctly, Elshtain (U. of Chicago) told me at a lunch that it can be hard to find work afterward, coming out of the Committee on Social Thought. The interdisciplinary nature of the work (which is awesome) unfortunately doesn't make you quite as specialized/qualified to teach in any one area or department, it seems.

Just a FYI...

Doesn't look too bad to me. http://socialthought.uchicago.edu/program/placements.shtml

I phoned the Social Thought office this morning and the administrator said they have not entirely completed admissions because they are waiting on the dean of students sign off on decisions. Didn't ask about timing or results.

Cool. Thanks for passing that along.

Nice work! I was also curious about when it's appropriate to make a phonecall. I looks like from the "Results" page many people buckle down and simply call the admin office, and end up getting a significant amount of helpful information (such as you have noted here).

When is it appropriate or not appropriate to call?

I received notice from the Committee about half an hour ago...no joy here. Email from the dean that explained the decision and a formal pdf letter attached. Good luck all!

Although I haven't heard anything, I'm not optimistic. My surname is toward the end of the alphabet, so I'll probably be hearing the same later on in the day.

Well, my last name starts with an 'S' which is pretty late in the game so maybe your good news is coming!
