  1. Sorry to hear about the rejection, Sichselbstoffenbaren.Good luck with your other schools! No word yet here....
  2. Has anyone else come across this gem? It's from www.gradschools.com, in an article entitled "What To Do While You're Waiting..." The first four items in the article were sort of bland but normal advice. The last bit was this: Buy a Chia Pet and watch it grow Caring for a fake pet will no doubt relax you and give you a friend to confide in while you're stressing about the results. Just don't desert him after you're accepted. Chia pets need sustained love and care. It also had a YouTube video of a Chia Pet commercial. Original article: http://www.gradschools.com/article-detail/waiting-125 I mean, now I know what my life was missing. How did I not see this before? I clearly need a Chia Pet.
  3. hahaha You TOTALLY got me falsely excited! It's okay though. I haven't heard anything yet; according to previous years we might start hearing in the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed!
  4. That is a good point. Thanks! Also, I couln't help noticing that one of your subfields is "Mixed Race Studies". That's so cool! I'm mixed, and my friends and I started a mixed race club in college, because our school (somewhat surprisingly) didn't have anything like that. I've felt for a long time that mixed race people and issues are largely overlooked in the US, so I'm glad to see that someone else is interested in them!
  5. Hey if you're still doing this, could you do mine too? I love this stuff lol. I sent you a message.
  6. I'm in a (sort of) long-distance relationship, and we couldn't swing a visit this weekend, so we'll be Skyping. Encephalization: That's too bad It must be tough having to come to that decision. For me and my boyfriend, it's kind of the opposite: We're long-distance right now, but when he goes to grad school, I'll be going with him. Since I don't really have concrete plans for after undergrad, I decided I'd rather move far away and be with him than stay here and not be with him. I hope things work out for the best for you!
  7. I am also wondering about Princeton and Michigan, incidentally. Anyone have any info?
  8. I like the way you think! I also like your icon. And the phrase "mad crazy balls".
  9. Thank you, Flambert and Hyacinth! All good advice, and much appreciated Flambert--It's nice to know I'm not the only one! Hang in there, and good luck!
  10. Hey all, So I have a serious need for advice from all you lovely, wise people. I've posted a couple times around the forums, but I am not myself applying to grad school right now; my boyfriend is. We're hoping he'll be hearing back from his top-choice program in the next couple of weeks, and while I actually have a lot of confidence that he could very well be accepted into that program, there is of course a lingering fear that he won't. So my question is this: if he doesn't get into his top choice, what should I do to help him feel better and move past it? I saw a thread a few days ago about what not to say to someone who's just been rejected. What should I say? I just want him to be happy.... Of course, this is not to say that I don't think he'll get in. I really believe that he has a good shot. But I guess being prepared for the worst will make me feel better? Thanks and continued good luck everyone!
  11. I LOVE Hyperbole and a Half! Good call.
  12. Ah! Thank you. I was, in fact, being dumb.
  13. Hoooly crap. I just had my one-and-only math class of my college career last semester, and we did a lot with Bayes' theorem, so I kiiinda got what was going on, but oh man, I never want to have to work out that formula ever again. Thanks for doing all that work, though! Definitely cool. I do have one stupid question, though: On the Petersons site, where are you guys finding the acceptance rates? Am I just dumb? I searched for specific schools and programs, and it just told me the application requirements and stuff.
  14. Oh definitely. But sometimes being pretentious is fun. @aletheuein Thanks! Good to know.
  15. My boyfriend is applying to the University of Chicago for Classics (I've kind of been lurking on thegradcafe, even though I'm not applying to grad school; I'm just so anxious and this makes me feel better haha). Anyone else applying to UChicago? Any idea when we can expect to start hearing from them? I am dying just having to wait like this! And here I was thinking I'd be able to avoid the stress of the application process--silly me! P.S. You people are Classics majors: Do you prefer the plural "forums" or "fora"?
  16. Hi! Nice to hear from you. I was also under the impression that fewer than five people tend to be admitted, which is very nerve-wracking! Do you have any idea when to expect a response from them? I looked at the results page, and it seems that in years past, people were admitted as early as mid-February and as late as mid-March. I really hope we don't have to wait until March; I'm not sure I could handle it. Good luck to you as well!
  17. Hey, world. First time posting, but I just spent an unreasonable amount of time reading through the forums (or fora, if you prefer), and found basically nothing about what I want to find out about. My boyfriend has applied to the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. He has also applied to some other places, but the Social Thought program is his top choice. Since it's so important to him, and since I'm a bit of a busybody, I set about trying to find other people who might be in the same boat as him, maybe find out when to expect acceptance/rejection letters, see what other people want to study, etc. But despite the Committee's being (apparently) very highly esteemed and well-known in the world of academia, I have yet to find a single community of people on the Internet devoted to talking about it. I know the program is small, but come on, Internet, I thought you had everything. Anyway, I guess I just wanted to send out a "Hey there" to anyone else who has applied to the Committee (I love calling it that. It makes me feel like I'm privy to some sort of underground organization), and to make a little space for people to ask questions and share information. So. Who else out there is dying to get into this program? Have you heard back from Chicago yet? Let's all suffer through the waiting process together!
