I'm very nervous, the professor I'm hoping to study with e-mailed and asked to talk to me, but gave me no other information. I'm currently and officially nervous and freaking out. I really wish that he would have just inserted a nice little "by the way, your app was great" OR "by the way, I want to call to say I'm sorry you didn't get in...."

something, anything, please... don't ask for my number and then wait to call me... call right away... PLEASE....

*sigh*

Here's some perspective for ya: I got an update that says, "An admissions decision has been rendered." But, it won't show me what the decision is. And, I have no idea how long it will take to update. Today? Tomorrow? A month?

Good luck on the interview. ;)

Wow I would go absolutely nuts. Maybe call the graduate secretary in the department?

This is good. There's something about your application that caught his eye - it sounds like he wants to interview you. Just be prepared to talk about anything on your application that he could ask about and to ask him a few questions about his research and the program. Best of luck!

I just finished talking to the professor. I should add that this professor and I have been in contact off and on throughout this whole process. We know each other from work in the field (archaeology) so I do somewhat have a head start on this whole process. Anyway, he elaborated a bit on what he hoped my research will look like in the program and he wants me to come out for an interview in February with the department and some of the other programs I'd be involved with. So, positive call in the end! *sigh of relief*

I would say it is almost universally a good sign if a professor wants to talk to you at this point in the game. They either want to interview you or welcome you to their lab. They aren't going to reject you themselves.

Right.. I feel that this is a really good sign. Like I said before, I feel like I'm cheating because this professor and I have had plenty of contact before I even applied. Whatever the case, he spent more time talking about my possible research possibilities at the school rather than if I'm in or not. Yay! I'm pretty excited, the interview will happen in February on campus... can't wait!

as an archaeology applicant myself, i'm intrigued as to what program this might be!

whats your area of focus?

Levantine Archaeology, specifically Late Bronze and Iron Age Transjordan. I'm applying to UCSD, there are several reasons that make this school the best match for me, but basically its the coming together of a good professor and great interdisciplinary research happening. I would actually be doing something that meshes IT with archaeology, since that is already what I've been doing over the last few years (I have been in the field now for several years, working in the Amman region, and for the last few seasons I've been specializing in GIS and database techniques for my project).

I see you are applying (I assume, have applied) to Chicago. Are you doing NELC? My wife is a PhD student at UChicago, nearing completion! Any word on your apps yet?

I did my field school with UCSD and sat in on one of their lectures on actually sat in on a lecture by Mazar on israeli archaeology when I visited some friends there last spring. My friends (also arch majors) seemed bored, but I thought it was interesting. I knew the TA too so that was moderately entertaining. It's a lovely campus if you haven't visited!

I am actually an Andeanist so I'm afraid NELC wouldn't get me very far haha. No word yet but its still early for all of my schools!

Yeah Mazar has been doing guest lecturing there for awhile, I am hoping he still will if/when I get to the school. He is still one of the best people for an overall understanding of the Levant and the "big picture". I've actually been re-reading his book about the levant and its layout, politics, etc. Great stuff. I honestly was bored to death when I read it 11 years ago in my undergrad, but I am loving it now but that is because I finally understand the lay of the land and how everything relates geographically so it makes what he says a lot more relevant.

Best of luck to you in your programs, that is certainly the second most interesting field of archaeology!! Just kidding! :)
