MFA 2024 Freak Out Forum

Yes, that's right. I majored in 'Design', so it is kind of ambiguous. At there, I mostly listened to grphic lectures though..

So I wonder if they regarded me as graphic design major.

I interviewed with Nontsikeleo, Julian, Neil, and Bryant.

I also think some faculty were poker-faced. But Bryant was nice. He told me about school, but I had problem with zoom videoscreen for a while so couldn't listen very well....

But I think you did great!! It's not common to recommend school lectures while doing interview. That's a really good sign.

Do you know how many people got an interview this time??

Thank you. I got into some normal company. And I'm working as a freelancer too.

Yes, I partly do!! My work is closely intricated with my daily life, and things surround them, so I think that's why they choose Neil.

And Bryant wells does interactive design, and I put one of the interactive thing in my portfolio.

How about you?

Which year was the open house??

I found one Yale article in 2022 named 'Yale School of Art applications close for 2022(i found difficulty posting link)' and it says SoA faculty mostly interviewed around 10%! Better for us:)

I also hope we get in!! fingers crossed.

Just got rejected 😭

Does anyone has feedback on Bard low residency MFA?

Damn, and you interviewed right? Did the interview not go well? From what I've heard UCLA hardly interviews, so I thought it was more of a formality than an actual assessment. I'm sorry 😕

Hi, an advice for you and those interviewing for NYU Steinhardt studio art when they ask if you have any questions for them is to ask them what faculty diversity looks like in their classes and/or critiques. Try to push and get a clear and non-vague answer.

Don't mean to deter anyone from going, the program overall is a good one, with a couple really great parts to it, but very much lacking in this above department currently. So if you're going into it, it's good to be aware of that and hopefully by asking this to them, it makes them confront and make changes to this issue.

I'm not sure about outside funding, but from the program itself, everyone gets half tuition scholarships and in your second semester a paid TA position in one class, and in your second year you get to teach an undergrad class for the two semesters. It's a union position and pay is really good compared to other schools, with health insurance reimbursed almost fully.

Let me know/message me if anyone has any other questions!

This is very helpful- thank you!

Do you know where I can access a list of faculty? Ive checked online and there seems to be a very limited number of faculty on the NYU website. I have very little knowledge about the faculty because of the lack of info online which is definitely a concern for me.

Have you interviewed with NYU before? Do you know how the interview is structured and what kinds of questions they ask? Any input is appreciated!

Thank you!

Yes I did interview. In my opinion, it went well. However New Genres did told me they were interviewing 10 people to only accept 2 in the end. So I new even after the interview I only had a 20% chance of getting in. So sad though. I still have an interview at Bard tomorow. Anyone has feedback about the program or the interview there.

Did anyone else get a vague email from SAIC (ceramics) requesting a phone call?

I got one from sculpture. It seems like I missed their call, and they sent me that vague email. Maybe ceramics department is trying to avoid such confusion in advance.

I don't know why but they just decided not to call again today but later tomorrow. I guess they just want to give a pleasant surprise, but I agree that it only gets us nervous...😂

There isn't really a list online I could find either. This could be another thing you ask them in the interview. It's ok I think cos there is a lack of that info on their part, not like you didn't do your research. But the people who were recently teaching the MFA classes have been: R.C. Baker, Martha Schwendener, Maureen Gallace (head of program), Ross Bleckner, Marlene McCarty, John Pilson, and Jennifer Krasinski. These may change a bit but pretty constant (and is the not diverse part, once you look them up you'll see). Then there's faculty who would do studio visits. Those are more fluctuating where there are swaps when some are on sabbatical. You could also just email and ask them for a list before the interview and see how they respond to that.

The interview I had was pretty relaxed, it was on zoom so I don't know if it'd be different in person if you're doing that. It felt more like a chat rather than a more formal interview, I'd say far more relaxed than any other school. I think it's just the regular questions. Since it's a very intimate program (only 10 max students a year) they'd want to think of student body dynamics too aside from getting to know your work, so they also just want to get to know (as much as one can) what you're like as a person.

Let me know if there's anything else I'd be happy to help! Feel free to dm me if you'd like
