Hello, has anyone heard anything back from UBC?

I applied to PhD program and would like to know if they’ve already sent out offer letters.

Hey guys, I got 10 rejs already and possibly another 5 are on the way. Just wish to share with you if you also applied to UBC: they seems to release the final decision by mid-March. A longer process than one might expect. I didn't hear from cornell, did anyone have any interview with the university? It's going to kill me and I am also looking for MA in history program, ancient history (early China, pre-Qin to Han), any suggestions?

Hi, may I ask if you applied for MA or PhD to UBC? I applied for the PhD program there, but I’ve heard nothing up until this moment. Do you know when will they send out results? Or they have already done that?

Hi Liisss, I applied for PhD. The coordinator replied that reception would be sent out starting from the end of Feb while rejections come in the mid of March. The decisions will be sent out in two batches. Good luck to you!!( I got the implied message that the outcome for my application was not successful as the coordinator told me that by mid-March I would hear the result...)

As a fair warning: I got my MA at WashU and intended to go straight to their PhD program, but the entire department is a mess. They won't have ANY tenure-track modern Japanese literature professors next year and the chair of the department is very difficult to work with (if you're not in their subfield you may as well not exist). The Korean side just lost most of their resources due to the librarian leaving, and the Chinese track is full of internal politics. Practically everyone in the department said I shouldn't even bother applying. Getting any offer is a miracle, but if it's from WashU... Well, I can answer any questions in DM.

Curious about this -- you mean WashU in St. Louis, correct? Both Rebecca Copeland and Marvin Marcus are modern lit scholars and are both still there, no? Though I think they are both nearing retirement, I'd imagine...

Both Copeland and Marcus have stopped taking graduate students. I believe Marcus was will sit on committees and Copeland is advising her remaining students, but neither will take new students and both are actively looking to retire regardless of the department hires replacements.

That makes sense. You don't think the department is going to do job searches for replacements? That would imply they are just going to let the dept. die. I have known a number of WashU J-lit people over my time as a grad student and I always got the impression it was a relatively lively program. But I suppose that is just my impression.
