Oh, I am in the same boat as you then. I was already at a foreign institution when I submitted my NSERC application.

The following question is not targeted towards you:

Has anyone who was awarded the NSERC this year had their notification state that the award is unconditional and can be held at an international university? If so, could the person please provide me with the exact (quote) statement?

They responded to my email today saying it would be available in a week or two. (But you still have to request it IIRC).

I just tried to log on to the NSERC CGRS D results portal (https://influence2.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/sites/800000/1024-2/?lang=en) but it appears that the result ZIP is just completely gone (it's not been replaced with a rejection letter thankfully). Anyone experiencing the same situation?

My result came out - unfortunately didn't get it but my mark did improve from my first application last year. My committee was 3 but noticed from last year there wasn't a single relevant subject expert in any of the 3 committees. Has anyone else experienced something similar? Has anyone tried giving feedback to SSHRC on the lack of appropriate expertise on the committee panel?

Also in this spot. Got the CGRS-D but mine says:
"You must hold your award at an eligible Canadian institution. You will be notified if an award becomes available that can be held at an international institution."

I was also very clear that I was at an international institution to start with. I applied directly to NSERC.

I emailed them and called in about this (went to voicemail) and am getting a bit worried; The letter says I must accept or decline by May 6th, but with the current timeline that seems impossible (How can I accept an award I'm not sure I qualify for?). I sent an "I accept" email to the email address specified anyway & uploaded a scan of my passport (and my Canadian Citizenship Card, just in case) on the portal anyway, hoping things just work out.

Anyone know if expecting an award for international uni applicants is realistic? I heard some stat that only ~10% of PGS-D's historically went international even through the limit was always 20%, but it seems this year is a lot different...here's hoping the US exodus meant more people stayed in Canada then ran to EU like me, lol.

Just got an email back from NSERC. I was told there is indeed a waitlist for international awards (apparently I'm 45th on it), and that it's best if I declare the "start" of my award on Jan 1st 2027 (last possible day to start the award for this cohort). They said they would notify me via email if an international award becomes available, but that I can officially "decline" the award after Jan 1st 2027 if one does not ("as long as it has not been activated"...whatever that means).

Hopefully that waitlist includes a lot of domestic applicants haha.

Yeah this happens/is normal. As it was explained to me in the various SSHRC application workshops I've been to, applications should be legible and make a case to people who are not specific subject experts in your area. 

I am in a very niche, understudied, and oft discounted (because it is feminized) area of my field, which has made it a real uphill battle for people to take my research seriously. I wasn't successful in my app last year and had only one person in my field (who wasn't even close to my research niche) on my committee (I'm also on committee 3). This year, I had several colleagues in other social sciences and humanities fields, as well as non-academic friends and family, read my application for clarity and to make sure I wasn't using jargon, writing for too niche an audience, or being too overly academic, and my app was successful! Obviously this wasn't the only change I made, but I think being really clear about how your specific niche is not just important in your field but also how your findings can be important to other fields in the social sciences/the Canadian public more broadly goes a long way.

Presumably this means there will be quite a bit of churn because applicants with no intention of leaving Canada received such offers. It is also possible to request a Summary of Results Letter with your application score and ranking, but this can take several weeks. Hope this helps someone! 

Update: I was just notified that my award has been upgraded to unconditional status, meaning they've started the redistribution process. From what I understand, the process could continue all the way through the end of the year, so don't get discouraged if you haven't heard anything yet!

I did get the $5 today, and I emailed them back with the confirmation. I did not receive any additional notification regarding when they will disburse the remaining funds.

My university just processed the award and sent for payment. Have not yet received it (usually up to a business day between their payment and me receiving it).
