I don't think it's essential to have a detailed research plan. If you can demonstrate that you're capable of understanding past research in the field and that you know how to formulate new questions regarding future research, that should be sufficient. I applied to many labs that use very different model organisms, so it wasn't really possible for me to have a specific project planned for each one. At one of my interviews the POI told me that I would probably spend the first semester deciding what system to work with anyway.
