What Rochester, what the heck Northeastearn? Purdue is better than either one of those, by a mile better than Northeastern. Plus you have a lot better chance since Rochester accepts only a handful of applicants. Purdue takes a ton.

I have no idea why people hang on Rochester so much, this miniature university has been on decline for decades. Plus horrendeous weather and rather unsafe expensive environment with a lot of crime. The only good thing is they have very good financial packages but as quality goes most of the places in Big 10 are better than Rochester and easier to get into.

No response from U of R yet. I'm applying for their CS PhD program (I'm guessing you are too, so good luck).

They don't say anything until April anyways, and only 30% of those accepted are U.S./Canadian students, and they only take 10.

yea, I agree with the other guy, it's not your best option. It's a solid school, no questioning, but there are better. The area is pretty lousy, but so are a lot of other American cities.

I don't know, do what's best for you. However, if you go to another school, it gives me a better shot of getting in :-) [i live in the area and want to stay in Rochester]

Thank you so much santana for your reply... yes... undoubtedly Purdue is far better than Rochester & Northeastern in every respects... but Purdue's CS dept is not that much big, last time they took only 25 students.. as I'm still in their wait list so i don't have any other alternatives as my other(accepted) universities(Except ETH-Zurich) are not that good comparing to Purdue, Rochester, even Northeastern... please pray for me...

Thank you so much knowledge for your wish.. good luck you too...

"they only take 10"-- you mean only 10 international students? :(

Yes.. I also agree... Purdue is better option.. but the result is still pending

Btw.. what do you think?? When they(Rochester) will inform us?

please keep in touch.... thank you

UoR's CS departments is one of the smaller ones in the nation, even smaller than Purdue's. In total, they have approximately 42 (+/- 3) PhD students in their program. They admit around 10 new students each year (10 total, not just international). The recent trend has been that 70% (or 7) of the 10 accepted annually are international applications. So this is the likely breakdown of who will get accepted this year:

*3 applicants from the U.S or Canada

*7 applicants from international schools

The upper bound for their number of acceptances per year is 12, so the numbers may be 4 and 8 respectively if they really like the pool of students. If you're an international applicant, your odds are better than mine (if the trend holds up). They had narrowed the pool to around 21 U.S/Canada students (at least that's how many were invited for a site visit), so I imagine that the total amount of finalists is in the 40-50 ballpark. Our odds as finalists are 10/(40 to 50) or 20-25%. Certainly not bad, but it is really competitive.

I'm guessing that we'll hear from them around April 8th, meaning we probably won't have a lot of time to consider our options with other schools. I personally don't care, as long as I get in, haha, although the wait is excruciatingly painful. In fact, I have yet to hear anything, even from my safety school (geez, I better get in there, I have solid enough credentials I would think...).

Oh well, we'll see. If I hear anything, I'll let you know ASAP. You'll probably hear before me. I'm not that lucky :-)

Rochester is smaller than Purdue!

And worse. I would say by a long shot worse though in rankings they probably come close.

It boggles my mind why would anybody prefer Rochester to Purdue. I have seen that Rochester was considered elite school, I just couldn't figure out why.

Purdue is not elite but it is definitely better school than Rochester, in my view.

Hey, I am sure you have better chance in Purdue since they will accept more folks.

The only good thing about Rochester is that funding packages are really nice but then again upstate NY is more expensive than Indiana.

Hi santana thanks again for your reply... "they will accept more folks "-- are you sure?? I heard that if someone get accepted at this time... the university won't give them any funding.. then it will be even worst than being rejected

please pray for me....

thank you again...

Yeah, they might get you in without funding. CS is extremely competetive, I know that. Sometimes it is hard to believe given the fact there is such a shortage of workforce.

In case of Purdue you are looking for tuition remission more than for anything else. In general, when you are dealing with university of that size it is always *relatively* easy to get a job there once you get in since they have a lot of undergraduates and a lot of services, you can get employed. So I would look for tuition remission first and foremost. If you get admitted you should immediately discuss that with department head and see whether they can help you.

One thing you learn in higher education: bigger school -> more opportunities.

My schoolmate and I are still waiting to hear from NU- we applied to the sociology program. My online application account things still says "your application is under review" and when I called the admissions department two days ago they said the department (sociology) still had not made a decision. ARGH.

Yes... you are right.. someone also told me that one.. but the problem lies on VISA.. in our country(other countries either) a full financial support from the university helps one to get F-1 VISA easily.. without that it's not easy to get VISA... that's why  ....

lets hope for the best... thank you so much for your help...

If the problem is just to get into US that is easy. Go for a weaker school with funding and once you are here, work hard on your first year courses and then transfer to a better school. Your English will get better, your test score (if you retake them) should get better and you will have one graduate year of CS in your portfolio that should help you to transfer to a better school.

As a matter of fact you are competing with foreign applicants mostly, they vastly outscore US citizens in CS and in science in general. So you need to be ready to beat that competition and it is not easy, the guys from IIT for example are as good as MIT or Berkeley people. But this is what you have to beat to get into elite US CS program. If you cannot, tough luck.
