JibberJabber Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I received a personal voicemail from a professor at one of my top choice programs followed by an e-mail from him telling me that I'd be receiving an offer of admission. Is there any chance that this means this professor wants to be my adviser?
qbtacoma Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 This professor may be on the admissions committee. Is this someone you have never heard of?
JibberJabber Posted February 11, 2011 Author Posted February 11, 2011 It is definitely someone I've heard of, and their work is somewhat similar to mine. I don't know who actually sits on the adcomm though.

Well, it is possible then that this person had a spot/funding for a grad student over your other preferred choice.

This advisor stuff is different in every program so it can be that - or something else. Better ask them to be sure
kateow Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 Sometimes a certain person on the adcom is tasked with informing acceptees, sometimes it's split up between the committee members, and sometimes your stated POI contacts you independently. I wouldn't read *too* much into it, just respond with thanks!
