alizang Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 Hey I just saw a Rochester rejection go up....has anyone been accepted yet....subject area?
WhereWoolf Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 My heart skipped a beat when I saw the U of Rochester posted...I live in Rochester and after getting rejected by Buffalo and (unofficially) by Yale, they're my top choice.
alizang Posted February 19, 2011 Author Posted February 19, 2011 Yes my top choice as well. this process is more stressful than I had anticipated. got my first reject from UC Davis and it actually brought some relief...Are you applying with an MA or BA? what is your subject area?
Tybalt Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Rochester is my current top choice as well (just a smidge ahead of UFlorida). I'm Early/Modern, Shakespeare and Renaissance Pedagogy. Mentioned wanting to work with Rosemary Kegl, Jonathan Baldo and Kenneth Gross in my SoP.

Tybalt Posted February 20, 2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Me too! are you currently an ma student? Yep. I'm wrapping up my MA at Saint Bonaventure University. I'm guardedly optimistic about Rochester. It's a great fit. They have a pretty decent track record of accepting Bonas grads (they took one last year, and another two years before that). My numbers are also in line with what they ask for (4.0 MA gpa, 680 V, 5.5 AW, 620 Subject). That said, I'm worried that my SoP may have had too much of a "narrative" tone, and I have an atrocious transcript in my undergrad past (I have two undergrad transcripts--the first one, where I went from 1998-2001, is dismal. The second is from the school where I actually earned my degree cum laude). We'll have to see. I'm hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. it's all I can do at the moment.

I agree about the stress. I check email all the time, spend way too much time on here, and rush home to open the mail. I'm kind of an unconventional applicant...I'm 44 years old, went to Cornell right out of high school, dropped out but continued to read avidly.Various circumstanced conspired to make me decide to give academia another chance last year, andI enrolled in SUNY Empire State College to finish up the B.A. I like school so much I just can't stop lol. I also have two transcripts, one of which (Cornell's) is mixed...but I hope I have good LoRs( all from people I've worked with over the past year), did well on the GREs (790V, 740 subject), and a I hope a decent enough writing sample. I think I'd like to work on 20th Century British and American lit. So we'll see what U of R makes of all this. Good luck to all of us.

Tybalt Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Out of curiosity, who do you want to work with at UF? i'm studying Early Modern here as an undergrad. That's why Florida is so high on my list. Sidney Homan seems like an absolutely perfect fit, from his research to his approach to classroom teaching. I would love to work with him on my dissertation (and UF would probably be even higher than it already is if it weren't for that whole heat thing y'all have down there--I'm a life-long denizen of snow-capped mountains. We don't get a lot of sharks and 130 degree temps up here).
alizang Posted February 22, 2011 Author Posted February 22, 2011 another rejection up! no one has been admitted yet? I can't take the anticipation!
Tybalt Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 another rejection up! no one has been admitted yet? I can't take the anticipation! Tell me about it. It's a daily double-whammy, too. I'm obsessing over my inbox all day (because admits have historically been notified via e-mail) and then dreading the ride home to check the mail (because rejects have historically been notified by post). It's enough to make a guy go nuts.
Tybalt Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 A third rejection up today as well. This is really strange. They are still about 7-10 days away from their notification window (based on the last couple of years). No acceptances or wait lists posted yet, just rejections. Is everyone in this thread still in play for Rochester? They are officially my second choice (behind UMD, where I'm wait-listed).

Unless there's a rejection letter waiting at home for me, I'm still in play. Weird how the rejections are trickling in...
the once and future grad Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I'm still in play too. I'm really happy with my one admit, but Rochester is high on my list - Alan Lupack is the best there is in my sub-subfield.
alizang Posted February 25, 2011 Author Posted February 25, 2011 I just got my second rejection today (BU). I didn't really have any interest in going there, but I am afraid this may be a trend. sigh. . I'm still in play too. I'm really happy with my one admit, but Rochester is high on my list - Alan Lupack is the best there is in my sub-subfield.
Tybalt Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 A fourth rejection just went up (this one via e-mail--Who e-mails rejections at 2am!?) Still no admits posted. This is about the strangest thing I've ever seen. It's like they are responding to one app every day. It's going to be a very stressful couple of days here. I'm wait-listed at my top choice, and my #2 and #3 seem primed to notify tomorrow or next week. Gaaah!

It may be that specific faculty are assigned to specific applicants. I don't know. I am looking at jobs....trying to convince myself that a pay check and 9-5 might not be so bad.

Tybalt Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Anyone willing to claim the U of Rochester admit? Sub-field? Based on previous years, I'm guessing we're going to hear one way or the other on Friday/Saturday.
crutch Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Anyone willing to claim the U of Rochester admit? Sub-field? Based on previous years, I'm guessing we're going to hear one way or the other on Friday/Saturday. I received an acceptance to Rochester this morning. My field is 18th-century British lit, with a focus on material culture and celebrity. I also talked a bit about satire and violence in my SoP, if I'm remembering correctly.

I am actually in the MA program right now and will most likely accept this offer.
