the awdude Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Just wondering who's going to the SMU campus visit/what everyone's research focus is? I'm critical theory,,, globalization and psychoanalysis mostly... which I've recenty been applying to Mexican-American border lit./history... Anyhoo just curious who's all going... looking forward to meeting everyone!
lmiskin Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Hi! I was thinking about starting a similar forum, so I'm happy that someone did! I'm also attending the SMU campus visit. My research areas of interest are Victorian literature (particularly the novel/sensation fiction), visual studies / visual cultural, and feminist theory. I originally applied to SMU because of Beth Newman's incredible work in all three fields, so I'm really looking forward to visiting the school and possibly meeting her. Still waiting to hear back from 6 programs, but given the generous stipend offered from SMU, right now its my first choice amongst the programs I've been accepted to. Interested to meet you and the rest of the prospective students
the awdude Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 Yeah SMU is the first school I've heard from so far... still waiting on several others that would probably be better fits for me, but at this point I don't see myself being able to turn down SMU's crazy-generous funding. But besides that, their Clements Center for Southwest/Mexican-American border history and literature would probably be a pretty great resource for what I'm interested in... I'm not very familiar with many of the profs. so I'm looking forward to meeting them and you!
19thcAfricanAmericanLit Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Hello, I will also be attending the campus visit at SMU. My reasearch interests are 19th century African American Lit and Southern Lit. It's a great program with amazing funding and wonderful faculty. I'm thrilled to have been invited. Looking forward to meeting everyone!
the awdude Posted February 24, 2011 Author Posted February 24, 2011 Has anyone heard anything about an itinerary of some sort? It would be nice to know how prepared we need to be if there are interviews and such... or maybe it's strictly a recruiting/meet-n-greet type thing?
19thcAfricanAmericanLit Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 No, I don't have any info about what we will be doing, other than the dinner Sunday night and the reception on Monday evening mentioned in the invitation. I wish I did though--I was wondering the same thing about whether this will be an interview or more of a recruiting event. I'm also curious how likely it is that those invited to the visit will end up getting offers. I really love everything about their program. I've read and re-read their graduate student handbook on SMU's English Department website and it just sounds so perfect. I love that it's a small program, and that they foster close mentoring relationships between grad students and faculty. And I almost can't believe the incredible research and travel support, on top of the huge fellowship. AND no teaching the first year or the dissertaion year. Ok, I am getting myself too excited; must remain calm Whatever happens, I figure being invited to the visit is a good sign, so I'm trying to just enjoy that for now and hope for the best.
lmiskin Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 It says in the FAQs section of the website that: "We intend to invite our top applicants to the campus before we require them to make a decision." So, I think that's us My assumption is that since it is such a small program, and they provide funding to all PhD students, they want to be sure of our decision before making a formal offer.

Congratulations to everyone! I spent my UG in the SMU English department and loved the people, the size, the vibe. All my professors had done such interesting work--AND they were good teachers. Lots of kind, intelligent folk.
lmiskin Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Thanks! Really looking forward to visiting the campus and meeting everyone
19thcAfricanAmericanLit Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 That's good to hear, Eli. It does, indeed, look like a wonderful department. Thank you, and good luck on your apps!
19thcAfricanAmericanLit Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 I'm just curious, did anyone here end up getting and accepting an offer from SMU? I accepted last week and am so excited to start in the fall!
