Congratulations, UofT English PhD admits! I see two results up. Would anyone be willing to share details for those of us still avidly waiting?

How were your stats; how did you find out; are you a current UofT/Canadian student; what is your subfield? Direct entry or got a MA? Anything you can tell us without comprising your anonymity would be welcome.

And again, congratulations! An admit to the best school in the country is a wonderful achievement!

I can tell you that for the UofT Medieval Studies PhD program, they're going through the applications in three batches, three different weeks. I called the program to ask about their medieval Latin exam, and I was told this information (she recognized my name and knew I was an applicant!).

Thanks for the insight, lapelosa! Glad to hear you had a good experience with the Medieval Studies gatekeeper. :)

I know it's early days yet for Toronto, since the materials deadline for a lot of programs was late January. The early acceptances are exciting but disconcerting.

Any other UofT hopefuls lurking on the fora?

Wow! Two more acceptances and a waitlist posted in the last day or two. I wonder if people are being emailed by their POI?

I'm not sure who is doing the e-mailing, but you can add another wait-list to the tally. A woman in my MA cohort (long 18th century) received a wait-list notification from UT today. She's in a bit of a spot, because Toronto is her top choice, but she's also holding an offer from SUNY Buffalo, so she might have to make a really quick decision.

I received an email from the DGS. Details to follow in the mail.

I'm Canadian with a non-Canadian MA.

Thanks, Tybalt. I've heard of a waitlist email from a friend of mine as well. It seems likely that all the Toronto acceptances have gone out then.

Lenz, congratulations on your admit! Has your status on the SGS website been updated to "Decision Made"? Mine has not, and I suppose I'm looking for any reason to keep the faith.

Just checked - no it hasn't changed. It's still "Under Review". Thanks very much and good luck to you!

I am on the wait list. I received an email from a professor in my field on Saturday morning. She said that they expect to be able to offer their wait listers spots by April 1.

Thanks for the info, crutch. I wish you the very best. Do you mind if I ask -- are you an American applicant and are you applying directly from your BA or from a MA?

Since I've asked so many questions of the fora, I'll share some of my own stats. I'm at a Canadian UG. My GPA for the last two years is ranked first in the department, but there's a huge gaping wound in my transcript prior to that (a situation that requires so much explanation that I could not bear to take up 150 words of a 500 word SOP with it and so... just didn't. And I'm now seriously second-guessing that decision). Beyond that, I have only a few little essay awards, strong LORs from two UofT alums, and what I think is a good fit in a collaborative program. Direct entry to the UofT Ph.D. was rather a glorious pipe dream, but I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll go the more usual Canadian pathway -- a MA with at least partial funding, and a larger round of applications next year when my fiance has a better idea where his career will take him.

I'm an American with a MSt from Oxford. I don't know if that really helps you!

*reviving this*

I don't suppose anyone applying to the Medieval Studies program has heard anything, have they (he/she)?

I'm waiting on this too! It still says "Under Review" in my online application. Grrr. Wish they'd hurry up. I noticed some other UofT MA acceptances appearing in the Results board, but not in Medieval Studies.

I was admitted to Toronto's one-year MA in Medieval Studies on Feb. 14. Although I knew this going in, I just couldn't handle taking out $35,000 in loans for a one-year program with no guarantee of admission to the PhD. Anyway, they required me to respond to their offer by March 4. I declined. So, I expect another round of MA acceptances should be going out soon.

Also, I know someone else who was accepted to the Medieval Studies PhD at Toronto. And they also only gave her until March 14 to respond.

BTW, my application status still says "Under Review" even though I have received emails and letters from both the Centre and the Graduate School. So, I wouldn't put too much stock in that.

Thanks for letting me know about the "Under Review" thing - I've come to hate those two words. smile.gif Maybe I'll cave an email the Centre. Although, honestly, I'm in the same boat. That is, if I'm accepted, I already know I'll probably have to say no, simply due to the complete lack of MA funding for US students. But I'd still like to know either way!

Was your MSt at Oxford funded, or did you have to shell out huge amounts of money on your own? And are you now applying to DPhil within Oxford? Any idea about doctoral funding there? The reason I ask is because I am waiting on funding decisions from Oxford myself now (and I was accepted in a MSt program). Good luck on the application outcomes!

Hi! Hopefully some of you are still checking this. I will be applying for grad school for the Fall of 2013 for a MA in medieval studies. I'm very interested in applying to UofT, but after reading this, I'm questioning my decision. I've tried multiple searches on TGC on funding at schools for MAs in medieval studies but have found nothing. On the UofT website, it mentions TA's and other scholarships, but I don't know how that works - do I apply for those scholarships (etc.) when filling out my application? I'll be happy to get in anywhere since I am not within the top 10% of my class and only have French under my belt, but I can't afford to go to grad school without any funding. Taking out 30 grand for loans would absolutely kill me. Does anyone have advice? Does anyone recommend other schools in or out of the US? Please and thank you!
