Phenomenologist Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Here's my scenario. I was accepted by Duke Div on 2/25, and asked them when scholarships would be awarded. They said they were hoping by "next week" (at that time). Well, that "next week" has come and gone, and I haven't heard back. I see two possibilities: (1) Scholarships haven't been awarded yet, and I need to be patient a few more days or a week or whatever. Or, (2) Scholarships have been awarded and recipients have been notified, and I simply wasn't one of them. If it's the latter case, I wouldn't suspect that they would go through all the trouble to notify all the accepted applicants who did NOT get a scholarship -- they'd presumably just not contact them about it. So I won't even get contacted AT ALL, in that case (and will be waiting indefinitely). So, how long do I wait before I try to contact them, to ask? Perusing these boards and the "Results" tab above, many people seem to be buckling down and calling/emailing the departments, to simply ask for news -- and successfully get the information they were looking for, without having to wait any longer. The reason I ask is because one of the other programs I was admitted to wants me to submit a seminary housing request form immediately (the deadline has passed), but I have to send my non-refundable deposit along with it to hold my place. However, I'm not certain I'm going there yet, because I don't have all my funding offers in-hand yet, to make an educated decision.
eklavya Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Right now, my friend. Looks like you have at least one place to go to in case Duke backs out. Since you were admitted, you can rightfully and courteously ask the peeps in your department about the funding situation. Good luck there!

I don't have any insider knowledge, but this sounds right to me. You are in already, so I can't imagine what difference it would really make. It would be really petty for a school to not fund you because you called to ask in the face of a pressing and legitimate reason.
troublelovesme Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Weigh your options: Is your deposit price worth an inquiry phone call about funding from another school? I'm not sure what your deposit is, but I'd probably say go for it...but then again easier for me to say than to be done.
sacklunch Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 I'm sure they just haven't sent you any information yet. Judging from your stats, I doubt you wouldn't receive a substantial, if not all, tuition comped. good luck.
Phenomenologist Posted March 9, 2011 Author Posted March 9, 2011 Thanks for the tips, guys. I may wait until I hear from Yale (hopefully this Friday!!), then get ahold of Duke.

Or are you applying for a theological degree? I know Duke has already done an admitted students open house, unless that was only for Islamic studies people.
sacklunch Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Perhaps that differs from the Div school and arts/sciences dept? Also, this is for masters, not PhD. sacklunch 1

You must be thinking PhD level, in which case you're right -- but I'm applying to the Div school's MDiv (not the University's PhD, nor the Div school's ThD).
