Hi

So my wife and I have been having some chats about Candler lately and we are kind of wondering if anyone knows anything about the neighborhood. We need to find a place that allows dogs/cats--nothing too big, no kids yet! In addition, we are wondering about transportation to and from the campus. Does anyone know whether or not its in the middle of the city or a suburb or what? Let me know if you get a chance.

I can't say about specific places to live, but it's in a relatively nice neighborhood outside of ATL. By outside I mean that it's not downtown. Cost of living in pretty high, at least compared to Durham. To get a decent apartment close to campus will probably be at least $900 per month. I visited there a few times and there were always students at bus stops waiting for a transit, so that wouldn't be a problem.

That said, if you are planning on going into ministry, have you considered student pastoring? Many small churches get MDiv students to pastor their church while providing them with a parsonage and a reasonable salary. I'm doing this at Duke right now. However, one negative is that I have to commute about 45 minutes to campus.

Wish that I could be more helpful. Good luck!

Dillskyplayer, that's my area, sort of -- I went to school there when I was younger, and have friends who lived in the area for many years. When I get a chance, I will write you up a longer response. As for city/suburb, it would help me if I knew what cities you were more familar with, so I could give you points of comparison. Emory is part of the "inner suburbs", sort of, which means it's not in the high rise area of Atlanta, but is what many folks living in the 'burbs would call "in town". Anyway, will write more later in the day or evening -- I have one last performance and have to get ready for that.

I actually was having similar questions about Candler. My mentor went there for his PhD, and so I asked him a laundry list of questions.

He finished up there six years ago, so a bit may have changed.

According to him: it is a rather nice, middle to upper class burb. Grounds are well kept.

Fairly trendy. I guess that the Indigo Girls live there and got their start in that neighborhood.

He said that Emory parking can be tricky. They evidently have a number of parking lots that require permits and then have shuttles that take you to campus from there.

Cost of living is rather high for the region, but obviously less than other areas of the country.

Safety of the area he was was pretty decent as far as he remembered. The school that I go to now is in the middle of a more financial/crime hurting community, and so he pointed out that the community for the most part embraces the university; there isn't a stark contrast of money at the university and money in the neighborhood.

Hey,

Good luck with Candler. I am really praying for you tomorrow with YDS and wherever life takes you. Your hurt was palpable on Friday and I am hoping for healing soon. Good luck to you and your wife! You deserve great things. God began a great work in you....

Hm. Never figured I could do that. Where I am -- there's like 4 seminaries and a superabundance of churches but.... they've all got a pastor =[

And oh, Trin, I live in Minneapolis. It's very trendy -- kind of like Portland. It's just COLD here all the time. That's why I laughed a bit when all this snow stuff went down on the east coast -- we got like 13 inches one day and we still had class!

I lived in ATL near Emory for about two years in a neighborhood called Virginia Highland. My husband and I both loved it. One of the few neighborhoods in ATL where you can walk to restaurants and coffee shops...lots of community businesses. Great neighborhood for families as well - I always saw lots of parents with kids taking walks in the evenings around the neighborhood. It is kind of yuppie-ish - the type of neighborhood where people dress their tiny dogs in sweaters and the local gelato place sells "doggie gelato." But if you can get past that, it is a great place to live. A bit pricey for AT standards, but I live in Boston now so it seems dirt cheap compared to what I currently pay in rent. The average three-bed will probably run you about $1400/month.
