  1. I am in the same boat. In fact, I just wrote one place and begged for an extension, but I feel like I am in limbo! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!
  2. This happened to me and it ended up ok. What happened was that you have been recommended and then it has to go back in another pile to get entered into the computer and processed and then you get a letter. Or at least that was how I understood it. This is not 100% since if you do not meet the minimum requirements for admission, but in general I think you are ok. I freaked out too, btw!
  3. I don't know but I would think that bringing a scholarship would definitely help because you don't have to match a funding source in order to come. I know at my current MA school, I think it would be a definite advantage. I saw a conversation a while back where someone was denied and then got outside funding (for a Phd) and was ultimately admitted, or at least people thought he would be admitted. Congrats on your outside scholarship. It sounds like to me you might have improved the odds:)
  4. I just had a minor meltdown with one of my favorite professors, who also sits on these committees at the MA level. She told me that in the case of this particular school they are given a certain amount of funding that can be handed out. So if you hear quickly it means that you were either so wonderful that they could not wait to throw money at you or you were rejected. For the vast majority of cases, it is a matter of trying to match the best candidates with the most money, which can take time because 1. They might 'recycle' refused offers 2. They review everyone not just yours to figure out how you compare 3. They might be screaming to try to get you money from other pots (like Uni money or something). Unlike undergrad admissions, there are many pots of money (all limited) and you not only have to be admitted but you have to match an available 'pot' to get funded. Her advice was to chill, because the longer it takes may (and the emphasis is on the fact that this is a MAY not a definite case) be an indication that they are actually trying to match the best package to you as possible, given the applicant pool and limited funding. On the other hand, this is no guarantee. I had a friend rejected today and the reason given was the limited class size. Good luck!
  5. I am still waiting on one school. I e-mailed today and requested a time frame since I have to know by Friday for another school and have not heard back yet (not an answer, but any e-mail reply). Unfortunately, if I do not hear back tomorrow, I may just take the other offer. AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
  6. If it helps, often you do receive a financial aid offer and acceptance in the same package. That happened with one of my schools, and the MA program I am attending now. The one school I am waiting for also told me that you will get an admission package, which includes fellowship and merit based aid, but not need based support (like loans).
  7. Thanks all! It just came through about an hour ago. I feel MUCH better now that I can see it on the screen!
  8. The one I am waiting for (and the one with the Interview) the Admissions person is away until April as well, and since their are no classes this week, when I called, I got a message that said no decisions would be issued until April 30th (and apologized for the delay). I am, at this point, delusional. It is the one offer that would rock my world, but I am worried that I am going to have to accept another offer if they wait too long. But at least I have stopped stalking the Post person every day. I am still checking my e-mail though. I have also made up a scenario where the reason it is taking so long in my case (I am ignoring that their are other applicants of course), is that they are preparing a fabulous funding offer which takes a bunch of signatures to get approved. Is it truth, no...Is it better than thinking that my application is underneath someone's forgotten coffee cup, yes....
  9. I am not in the same situation, but please take this advice from an advisor I trusted. I did not get enough funding to go to my dream school. My advisor suggested, rather then reject it outright, see if I can study part-time for a year, do a really, super job in classes and get recommendations from people in the department to be in a better position to ask for more funding/apply to scholarships the following year. It did not work in my situation because my dream school did not change their financial aid package after you were admitted, so no luck. But if we apply it to your situation, it might work out. If you take a few courses (which will cost you say $3000 a course in my world), and rock those courses in the fall term (when recommendations need to be written for next cycle), you might very well have the chance to get great recs, have a community to bounce SOP, and writing samples off of, and be able to hone your research interests based on what you know actually happens in graduate level courses. If you apply for same school as your certificate, you may be able to transfer the credits, and you essentially paid for one semester, but put yourself in great shape to get admitted and get funding for the rest of your program. Besides, as I am not finishing an MA, I can tell you that if you have 9 credits out of the way before you start, you will love the freedom it gives you to be able to reduce workload, take an elective, and graduate on time. Good luck, but I think that may be an excellent choice if you can swing the cost of a few courses. In fact, it might put you in better shape than if you were admitted this year, but without great funding.
  10. So, here is my new panic situation. I got an offer from Columbia GSAS and received a wonderful e-mail from my POI. However, I was told that I needed to go back to the admission web site and click 'Accept'. But my application is not showing that I have been accepted yet, so I cannot click. I sent a brief e-mail to my advisor's administrative assistant, and she told me to contact admissions. I tried, but I think maybe people are out for Passover/Easter. Is anyone else having this problem? I am deciding to give it until after the Passover/Easter holiday since I am sure a lot of people are out. ps, my creeping/hysterical fear is that my POI was wrong, sent it to the wrong person, I am really not loved!
  11. I am in the same position. So far, I have been accepted to one (my reach) with 1/2 tuition, found out last week I was accepted with funding for a late application, and the one I interviewed for (also a later date), lo and behold I have not heard back from. I keep looking on the boards and no one has claimed admission, but it is a really small field so it is likely that they just might not be on GradCafe. They also shelled out money on me, so it would be nice to hear back.... I am wondering if I should call and see if a letter got lost? I just want closure at this point...
  12. still waiting on a school, any time now!

  13. I did attend an Open House a week or so again, and I was really glad to have the face time with my prospective advisors and the folks in admission. I am not sure if it actually helped, but it made me convinced that I might actually fit in there and I got a lot of good vibes from it. (And I have not had a very good admission cycle!). So, it calmed me down and yes, it was worth it. If you really want it, then, it might help to show that. Then again, the decision may already be in the can. But if you really want it, my feeling is you should do everything you can do to try to get noticed and let them know you care (as long as you don't end up getting fired or something dismal like that)....
  14. This has been a rough season for me. I initially applied to one program (big mistake) and the at the last minute cast the net wider. As I did, I found out I really, really liked a program close to home. I applied and low and behold realized I had 3 typos (not huge but present) in my writing sample. My first dream school did not give me enough funding-a no go, and the second one has accepted me on the web page but nothing in writing (it does not feel real). But then there is my new dream school dangling out there. I am pretty sure I am going to be rejected. After my first no-go, I began to furiously look for jobs (no luck!) So what are my plans? I am going to cry, eat an entire bag of chips and then return to my job hunt in a dramatic fashion that will likely include fast food and every other job imaginable.....
