So as I was trying to get my mind off of being waitlisted, I accepted a friend's offer to go on a road trip from Chicago to Yellowstone. Problem: it's the week of April 15th! What was I thinking? She says there should be sufficient reception along the way, but that's a risk I'm uncomfortable taking! If I'm offered a spot off the waitlist on say, April 15, and I don't call back until the next day, will my offer be revoked? Do departments wait or do they just move on down the list?

Hard to say. I'd think it was unreasonable for an offer to be pulled if someone can't answer their phone for a day! Sounds like your trip (other than the questionable service range) will be a good thing for you at this time though. Hopefully you will have good service or at least be able to check in somewhere with service bars once a day.

I would set up a voicemail telling people that you're traveling and may/may not have service, so to leave a message and that you would get back to them ASAP.

I did that when I was in Argentina, and they waited until I got back to do a phone interview.

Good luck!

This may be a bit much, but if you're really concerned, I would sign up for google voice and have your voicemail forwarded there if you can. That way, you'll be able to check your voicemail online (in case you have internet access but no cell service).

I've driven from Chicago to Omaha and from Omaha to Yellowstone. And stayed in Yellowstone. And I can say confidently that you will have cell reception. There are probably small pockets where you won't. But the people who call will leave a message, and you'll be able to call them back that day when the bars on your phone return.

It'll be OK. If it's really bothering you, you can set up your voicemail to have a "vacation response," but I really doubt it will be necessary.
