Cuddlyhorse Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 Hi all, Long-time lurker, first-time poster. I applied to the University of New Mexico's PhD program in Evolutionary Psych. and am really confused as I have yet to hear even a peep from them. I received an email letting me know they were missing one of my transcripts (and sent them another), and so I thought that may be delaying things. But, it still feels unusually late to have still not heard anything at all regarding my decision status or even whether my application was reviewed at all, and I've seen no results posted in the "results search" section either. I'm not optimistic this late in the game, but would like some closure. Has anyone heard anything at all from this school?
lavenes Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I applied to the same program and have not heard a a decision either. I did receive an e-mail last week saying they were still making decisions.
Cuddlyhorse Posted March 23, 2011 Author Posted March 23, 2011 Ah, well that's good new then, I suppose. Did you inquire or did they send you that email unprompted? Also, who are you applying to work with?
lavenes Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I inquired since it had been so long. I applied to work with Gangestad. How about you?
Cuddlyhorse Posted March 23, 2011 Author Posted March 23, 2011 Oh okay. Same here! Best of luck with the application from here on out!
AH1 Posted March 27, 2011 Posted March 27, 2011 (edited) I also applied to work with Gangestad and haven't heard anything. I guess it's kind of comforting to know we're all in the same boat. Edited March 27, 2011 by AH1
Fr. Bu Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Applied there too, but in Clinical Psych, haven't heard anything either :-( If you ask me, compared to the other Universities I applied to, their process is very inefficient and unfriendly :-(
Cuddlyhorse Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 I haven't gotten the unfriendly impression; the people I've spoken with have always been polite. Has it been different for you? Inefficient certainly seems like a fair characterization though. At least it's not just us!
AH1 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I'm getting the impression that the problem is funding. I imagine they're waiting around to make admissions decisions because they're hoping more funding will become available to offer students. I would love to attend this program, but I don't know how much longer I can string along other programs that have offered a good funding package.
Fr. Bu Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I stand corrected, deleting unfriendly in my last comment, but still sticking with inefficient :-D I also want to attend their program, especially since my interest is addiction. But I can't wait forever for their response, especially if I have other offers :-( Or at least give us a heads-up, or notify people on their top list to hang on :-(
benders_antenna Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Hey everyone, I wanted to add a few points on this, even though it's a bit late. FIrst, best of luck with the Ev Psych program at UNM. I've met with Dr. Gangestad before and I could see him as a fantastic graduate advisor. I think funding is definitely a factor at a lot of schools especially with the current economic climate. But I also know that UNM recently got a new faculty member in the Ev Psych area. New faculty members sometimes have an upper hand with selecting grad school students since they are under more pressure to publish for tenure purposes. So if you didn't have any luck, it could just be a bad time. The Ev Psych program is a bit smaller than others, so even if you tried again with another faculty member, you would still have to opportunity to learn from the man. I've heard that Clinical Psych is one of the most competitive graduate programs at UNM. Successful applicants almost have to be on par with Med School admissions standards to get in. As you know, it's a great place to get solid training pertaining to alcohol and addiction. If any of you all ever make into UNM, let me know. I moved to Albuquerque less than two years ago and would love to meet more folks with similar interests. Cheers, Carlos
