I am waiting for this school too... I emailed them for status inquiry and they reply:

_________________________________________________________

Dear #####:

Applicants offered admission and who have also been awarded a fellowships will be sent a letter of admission and award by April 1.

Applicants offered admission only, or admission with financial support administered by the department, will be notified as the department makes its recommendations, usually by the end of April for the fall semester.

Applicants who are not offered admission will be notified by the departments as they make their decisions.

Best.

I emailed them as well and got the same message as you. I also applied last year to Berkeley and had to email them as well. This was last years message they sent me about admission decisions:

(For Fall 2010)

Dear Applicant:

Our final admission decision will be made by April 10. You will receive an email regarding your application status.

Regards,

Graduate Students Office

Department of Mechanical Engineering

University of California, Berkeley

It seems there are so many this year they have to push back acceptances to the end of April which makes no sense when you have to decide by April 15th. Last year everyone got rejected on the 9th of April. Anyway good luck to you!

I am domestic and still waiting to hear. Just got word from Vanderbilt, so now Berkeley is the only school out of ten applications that has not responded. A friend tells me that this is a good sign, that I must be in some final rounds of decision making. Anyone agree with that logic?

Also, does "not hearing" from a school this long mean that I am on an informal "waitinglist"?

If you haven't heard for this long it usually means you're on an informal waiting list. This year's application process to Berkeley's mechanical dept. is a little weird. Last year they told people a final decision would be made by april 10th. As a result on April 8th or 9th last year mass rejects went out. I didn't see any rejections before that date. This year is an exception. When I emailed the school they said they would make final decisions towards the end of April and its very odd that rejections have gone out when there are still people waiting for decisions. Usually Berkeley likes to send all the rejections at the very end on one day according to the past several years based on the results search. I am hoping that this is a good sign for both of us DrDogg and that Berkeley is trying to gather dept aid for folks like us. I am hoping for the best! Good luck to you sir!

Berkeley is really bizarre because all other schools want a decision from us on April 15th.

So (and I am being very optimistic here), in the scenario that someone is accepted to Berkeley AFTER they have said Yes to another school, what is the process to cancel their decision with the other school? I have searched for it but have not found much.

I suppose if it is only a written intent and not a non-refundable deposit, then it is as simple as writing back and saying, "Never Mind", or "Psyche!".

Any suggestions or ideas? I will post this in a new thread too.

I was in a similar situation last year with UC Davis. Basically I got hired for a job and didn't want to go back to school. I told them pretty close to the start date in September. Basically I emailed the graduate coordinator for the department and told her that I wanted to defer grad school for a year so that I could work. All it took was an email and she took care of the rest. I would imagine that the process would be pretty similar if you were to decline your acceptance somewhere. Just email them and say that you would like to decline admission. Most cases they don't care because they can just save money on you and give it to other students which is what UC Davis told me last year. Hope that helps.

Finally I got rejected from UCB & I'm an international student with US degrees... kinda sad but I am curious to know the profiles of those people who got accepted...

Did you get a rejection email on Friday April 1st or did you receive yours afterward?

Got my rejection e-mail last night. I am a U.S. applicant, so it seems it is not just international getting their notices anymore.

Good luck to everyone who still has not heard, since last night you must be at least one step closer.
