NSF GRFP

It seems like it might be more efficient for GRFP to use machine messages rather than having people answer the phones at this time of year. They give more or less canned answers, and everyone is asking the same question. The money they spend on call center personnel could be used on a couple more fellowships!

Maybe all the waiting is just a ruse. Maybe they really ARE too "busy" doing something else...

so they can't do porn anymore....instead, could you imagine nsf/call center employees following this forum and giving scintillating responses to see how fast it would get posted then follow with generic answers for a while until the person feels like rousing up desperate grad students again?????

Question...if awarded the NSF fellowship can I immediately defer it the first year? Or do I need to claim tenure for the first year and THEN I'm eligible to defer for any of the following years?

From what I understand, I can defer any two of the 5 years, including the first. Just thought I'd ask everyone else on here.

Thx

I think you have to accept it the first year, and then defer any other 2 years

Au contraire, I'm afraid.

According to a document on nsfgrfp.org:

"You can defer the award for up to two years and take other funding if this is something that appeals to you. You might also defer the first year, take two years of funding, then defer another year, for example."

http://www.nsfgrfp.org/assets/File/NSFG ... 08%20NEW(1).ppt

So, for example, you can accept NDSEG, use that for 2 years, and then use the GRFP funding.

the worst is waiting for almost this long, and the possibility of "sorry, u are not good enough"

maybe the stimulus will also afford a free t-shirt or mouse pad to all the desperate grads, who don't get the fellowship, who checked their email 324789749 times looking for a reply. :D
