Studying for the NEW GRE

Hi!

I am just now starting to study for the new GRE (going to take in September) and I was wondering which books you guys would recommend. I went by a bookstore yesterday and I am not sure if I should go with Princeton (there are a few options with an actual manual and also a book full of verbal and quant drills), Kaplan, or wait until Barron's comes out with their new book in July...A friend of mine had a bad experience with Kaplan for MCAT so I don't know if I should trust them for the GRE (even though its a different test...).

Also, as far as I can tell learning vocabulary isn't going to help for the revised GRE, is it? It looks like vocab will now be tested only in context. Do you think I should devote my time to vocab memorization?

Don't use Kaplan, their verbal preparation didn't help me with the old GRE. Their quantitative section was helpful but not the greatest prep. I'm using Princeton Review's books right now and I'm loving the strategies and tips they have for taking the revised test. And even though it may seem that vocabulary isn't heavily tested on the revised version, ETS loves to use difficult vocabulary anyway, so I would study high frequency vocabulary lists just in case.

You can also use the ETS Powerprep II software for a free practice test.

Might as well get a book or two to review until Barron's comes out. Then use Barron's for practice tests/questions. I wouldn't wait just to study Barron's prep book since it's debut is in mid summer and your test is in Sept. These are just my two cents. I'm taking mine in late Sept too, and since the format has changed to be context based questions, I'm assuming it will be even more difficult to score in a higher percentile than with the previous GRE, so I'm going to study early and study hard!

Good luck!

I don't come up with, unsurprisingly, too many hits on the whole "which books/software are best for New GRE prep?". I have used NOVA for MCAT prep..It was very strong in most places. PR was "OK" for MCAT. ... What do people think of NOVA, PR, vs Barrons (never used) for GRE? Thanks alot! I've already received Kaplan, but not too impressed.

Do they already have powerprep for the new exam? I will definitely use that.

I think I'll just get ETS's book plus Princeton review for now...

Kcola - I think Barron's is the best for GRE as far as I've heard from people and forums...

have you bought the two books you mentioned? did you find the ETS book and the PRinceton Review to have similarities. Did you find the ETS book to repeat stuff from the website?

I'm thinking of buying these two books as well and I'm just wondering if I really need to buy both or the Princeton one will do. I am also planning on buying the Barron's one when it comes out.

Hi )) how should we prepare for the new revised Verbal part (cos there are a lot of reading)? I think only vocab memorization can't help us in this revised test//

I've gone through the Princeton Review book (I think they were the first ones after ETS to publish anything on the new GRE) and I think the sentence completion part is great, but reading comprehension is not. The problem is all these companies are probably not even sure about what is going to be on the revised version, so they haven't figured out any maverick strategies to tackle it. In other words, I am a little frustrated with the whole Revised GRE thing and looking for some materials that could really help to ace it.

The best books for the revised GRE are....

1) Cliffs Notes GRE General Test with CD-ROM

2) Official Guide (good for sample practice problems)

3) Math Review for Standardized Tests

Good Luck!
