Tyler School of Art VS Cranbrook

Hi all

I am having hard times diciding between Cranbrook and Tyler.

Both are, of course, great schools.

I am interested in painting and printmaking.

These are pros and cons.

Cranbrook

pros. Higher Ranking in general. 4th in US

no A B C D grades

intense discourses

cons. Completely isolated location

No undergraduate (no or less Teaching opportunities)

small number of faculties

Expensive

Tyler School of Art

pros. Good location and marketable area (Philadelphia, close to NY)

Brand new state of the art facilities (newly built in 2009)

option for study aboard in Rome and good chance of TA job

affordable (all Tyler MFAs get 25 % scholarship and also its part of Temple University which is a public school)

Cons. lowerly ranked than Cranbrook in general (still very high though)

A B C D grades

Big University (Crowded?)

Actually, Tyler seems to have better options but Cranbrook ranking is so high (higher than Tyler)

How do you guys think about these two schools? which one is better? for painting and printmaking.

Cranbrook is tiny and on its way down. Tyler is having administrative problems, from what I can tell (deans have been rolling through there like lost golfballs), but it's big and you're sure to find a sympathetic peer group. To some extent both are resting on their laurels a bit, but Cranbrook much more so.

Dare I say--Cranbrook hasn't been relevant for 10 years.

I am going for Tyler! not because of your opinion, but the fact that Tyler has better options for me.

also Philadelphia is booming at this moment.

Tyler, hands down. Ranking isnt everything and the location of Tyler will more than make up for it. They regularly take trips into NYC and are not shy about introducing you to people that you'll need to know after you graduate.
