Caner Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 (edited) Hi I hold MA in Women's Studies in Istanbul University. And I am writing my thesis about ''Giving Meanings to Sexual Identities'' Crazily I read anyone possible in field of Sexuality. Especially sociology of sexuality. Do you know some Graduate PhD Programs where I can pursue PhD in Sociology with focus on Sexuality? I took 93 from TOEFL. Thanks, I will apply this fall, and I HOPE they accept me to PhD in Sociology. AND Is it disadvantage for me to have MA in Women's/Gender Studies on the way to PhD in Sociology? Thanks! Curlygrrl Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Surprised no one has responded to this yet - would love to hear what GCers have to say. Hi I hold MA in Women's Studies in Istanbul University. barilicious Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 As someone whose main area of interest is sexuality, I can say that you will be hard pressed to find a program that has a sexuality focus. Sexuality is still very much understudied within sociology, and I was told at several recruitment events, that if I want to be marketable on the job market, I better find a marketable field (e.g. health or immigration) that complements my sexuality focus. Having said that, there are professors at certain universities who are doing sexuality work. I would say read current sexuality journals - Sexualities, Journal of Sexuality Research & Social Policy, Culture Health & Sexuality, and so forth (these are all interdisciplinary journals, so not all people publishing in them are sociologists) - to see who is publishing and where they are teaching or are studying. There are great professors out there, you just have to find them, and one's that match your interests. However, finding a department that has a strong sexuality focus is probably not going to happen, especially if you want to go to a top school. As for having an MA in Women's & Gender studies, this should not be a problem. There are many people who go on to get a PhD in Sociology who come from many different fields. Just make sure that your statement of purpose is very sociologically oriented, and talk about how your MA in Women's & Gender studies will complement your research interests in sociology. I double majored in sociology and women's and gender studies in undergrad, so I know it isn't too hard to connect the two areas. Good luck!
Soc-brioche Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Hi Caner, The Soc departments that list Sexualities as one of their special programs are: California - San Francisco California - Santa Barbara California State - Fullerton Concordia (Canada) Georgia State Kansas New Mexico State South Florida Southern Illinois - Carbondale Temple York (Canada) There are many schools that list Sex & Gender (there's a USN ranking for this area, too). Not the same, of course, but you might find faculty whose work interests you. Hope that helps! Soc-brioche
SocioFem5 Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 Wow crazy that 2 years later I am also looking for a similar Ph.D. program. I am looking for a Sociology program that has a focus on sexuality. the only one I found was Georgia state but now I will look at the others on the list given. Sexuality really is an under researched field of study.
