  1. You do realize epi is very research based...maybe you need to quantify ( )what research you are not interested in conducting.
  2. Excuse my ignorance, but as someone like myself not technically proficient is that something I need to do in order to have my current phone work under ATT?
  3. Do you recommend unlocking the phone first? Before approaching an ATT store for example.
  4. Ok so yes I am freaking out about my being able to enter the US Hassle free- crossing by land will be driving up. As a Canadian citizen I know I do not need a visa but of course even if I had a visa it doesn't guarantee that CBP will let me enter. So I want to be prepared- at least as much as I can be. On my I-20 what my school noted down that my means of support exceeds what they noted on the same form as the estimated student cost for the term. So to my understanding that ensures that I have proven my financial standing- correct? Can the I-20 act as proof of sufficient funds to cover all expenses while in U.S.? At this point I have no other financial documents- should I change that? Second I am concerned about the following requirement: "Proof of ties/residence in country outside the U.S. which have no intentions of abandoning" What constitutes proof of ties? All my family (and friends) are in Canada. This is where I want to be. How though does one prove that? I don't own a house (I rented), don't own a car (sold it a few years back), I don't have a job (come on- I'm a student). What proof other than my word is there? My proposed dissertation is all about my city in Canada- but I don't think that proves anything. Please put this crazy person at ease. I cannot believe my courses haven't started and I am this stressed out!
  5. Surprised no one has responded to this yet - would love to hear what GCers have to say.
  6. Great! Thank you. One less thing to worry about.
  7. Thank you so much! It's what I thought but wanted to be sure.
  8. Let me start of by saying- please excuse my ignorance, but as always I turn to you GC for some insight and clarification. Ok, so I finally got my I-20 form and just paid my SEVIS. But now I am confused. Do I need to contact the American Embassy for an interview or not? I was always under the impression that while I do not need a visa that I still need to book a time for an interview. The university though sent some papers with my I-20 and one of them said that: "Citizens of Canada are not required to obtain an entry visa at a U.S. Embassy but must present a passport, the I-20 form and the SEVIS fee receipt, and must obtain an I-94 Arrival/Departure card when entering the United States in order to enter the U.S. in valid F-1 student status." So am I or am I not exempt from the interview as a Canadian citizen entering the U.S. for doctoral studies?
  9. On GradCafe a number of posters recommend opening an account with a credit union. I have tried contacting a couple and have been told as an international student I cannot join. Do any of you know of one that will accept an international student like myself?
  10. I will need to open an American bank account and it seems most of the students I have spoken with in my department have an account with either HSBC or Chase. When I ask for more information as to benefit of one or the other, they mention only of proximatey to campus. I turn to you on GradCafe to provide me with some insight whether pro or con regarding these two banks.
  11. Found a one bedroom in the Westcott area and will be moving in July. So that is one thing I was able to check off my list. Now I am wondering what those of you leaving in Syracuse would recommend in regards to banking and cellphone carrier. I am an international student- so can use some insight. Thanks!
  12. Yes that might be unfortunately true. As a Canadian that applied to American programs the same is unfortunately true. So bottom line a strong application and a strong match with the department is key regardless where you call home. When it came to me being accepted in the US what helped was establishing strong ties and recognizing a strong fit between myself and certain faculty. It's why I stress get to know the faculty at schools your considering and e-mail them! Might not work with every school but if there is a strong fit it definitely won't hurt and might even help. In my case, I only recently learned my POI became my strongest advocate in the admissions committee. If you want to go to school in Canada- apply, apply, apply! Best of luck!
  13. Would totally disagree- the UofT Soc department I heard is falling apart. But could be good for you depending on your specific focus. Always go more for the faculty then the university. York has some strong faculty that you should consider, McGill is always known to be strong - again depending on your personal interests. There are some amazing stars in faculty across the country and you will do yourself a service by basing your search on a personal level rather than ranking. Ranking is not really used here in Canada like in the US. Best of luck with your search.
  14. You have to be more specific than that- public health is a broad field both academically and from a job placement perspective.
  15. Any suggestions for someone moving from Toronto to the US? What issues will I have with customs- if I drive myself or if I use PODS?
  16. After applying to the NYU American Studies program and being rejected. Today I get an e-mail asking me to apply to the Draper MA program. Anyone else? Heard its one of NYU's cashcow programs. Anyways, first I was insulted but then I just had to laugh. I have 2 PhD offers thank you very much!
  17. Actually we need more md's with an understanding of the social determinants of health and an ability to advocate and push for policies to address them
  18. As an international student I did not know of the April 15th deadline- till coming to this site. So please correct me if I am wrong... Basically if you have an offer the school cannot harass you as to your decision till April 15th but also students can lose their offer if they do not accept or reject their offer by April 15th as well. Once having accepted an offer you cannot rescind past that deadline, but you can before (even though some might consider that in bad taste). There is a whole forum on this national deadline on GradCafe. Johnnyquest2009 in the letter you got from Brandeis they allude to this deadline (or at least they did on mine). They also though noted that as we haven't secured funding that we can respond after this set date. This is why I am so concerned about my offer. In my case it’s a catch -22. I am waiting to hear about funding from Brandeis. Usually students don't respond if they are accepting or declining an offer till April 15th- so most likely the chances of securing funding won't be clear till after that date, meaning I would potentially lose the offer made to me from another program/school. I have no preference for one school or another I just don’t feel like the choice is mine to make but rather that under these circumstances they are being made for me. On the other hand I understand why such a policy has been put in place- those on a waitlist must be going nuts wondering if they have a shot this year or not. It’s all around a crappy situation to be in. Moraurora I am sorry I know none of this helps you out at all.
  19. I was just reacting to not having heard by now- when the april 15th deadline is fast approaching. It's nervewracking and so I was sympathizing.... I didn't know or look into when the due date of the Sociology application was Johnnyquest2009- didn't even think to check. Nonetheless a late application does not excuse a lack of response by now I always believe in e-mailing the grad coordinator- a nice e-mail can go a long way into getting some peace. Even when the news is bad I'd personally just rather know then wait.
  20. You should e-mail in and ask- to have you wait this long is crazy and a bit rude actually
  21. This is a direct quote as to what was shared with me: "It's hard to predict what will happen, but you are third on the wait list for one of the three funded assets slots, which is very high on the wait list. " Now I don't know how this works as if I recall they have a number of different fellowships/scholarships available with different funding arrangements. I do not know how many people receive funding but looking at the history on the results page it's not that much and some of those that do receive funding it is only partial tuition or worse no tuition but a small stipend. Maybe though you asked specifics and then will be willing to share that information with us.
  22. To the social policy program? I just e-mailed them and asked
  23. I am in a similar situation to yours except my School 2 has me waitlisted for funding but I am at the top so they believe I will be awarded their full-funding package with stipend. The other big difference for me is that the city for school 2 has a higher cost of living than school one so the money offered at school one will go a lot further while with school 2 I can still go into debt. So I am very interested to hear how people respond to your query.
  24. When I was accepted a few years back we got a mass e-mail notifying of our acceptance by Michael Goodstadt (director of HP) in the first or second week of April . I remember it being rather late- I had other offers that were letting me know if I don't accept their offers soon I will lose them. UofT doesn't seem to care that they put students through the ringer- looking back I should have seen this as a sign of the things to come.
  25. Seems someone posted a rejection from NYU via e-mail on the results page. Has anyone heard anything?
