I did. I was accepted but without funding rather waitlisted for funding. I was just notified I am third on the waitlist for funding but not sure what type of funding that is. Have you heard anything?
-
Has anyone heard from Dalla Lana School of Public Health? Specifically interested in the Social Science and Health Doctoral Stream. Just curious if anyone has heard anything or has any information to share?
-
What about NYU- any news yet? I have to wonder...do they do this purposely...to drive us crazy??? At this point if I am in or not I have resigned that I just want to know so that I can have some PEACE!!!

Interesting. I am still waiting to hear from the social policy doctoral program at Brandeis (Heller). If I am to get in I would then apply to the sociology programso that I can do the joint degree. The qualitative focus is good for me but hearing that students get "lost" doesn't sound so promising.

What are people's thoughts on the Sociology program at Brandeis?

Top schools have in many cases little to offer in regards to real teaching experience and while faculty might be token experts in their field they might not have the time to be able to mentor you in your work and push to publish, present etc. Smaller programs provide more opportunity to build up your teaching experience and prowess and often have faculty that will advise and push you within your research area. I have been told by a number of professors that I admire that it's not so much the school you graduate from but what you do while in your program. In terms of getting jobs, and then getting promoted, what I think matters is, first, the fit between your work and the particular department you apply to, and second, your productivity in whatever terms the hiring department measures/values that.

Waiting to hear still from Brandeis Heller from the Social Policy Doctoral Stream. Is anyone else waiting? Need a place to commiserate? What are the overall thoughts on the program?

Psychics, Tea Leaves, Horoscopes, and other witchy things

Not to put a downer on this thread but it didn't work for me. Was promised good news yesterday and today (March 3rd and 4th) and was rejected yesterday from my top choice and nothing but crickets so far today...... Now like you I was just using it as a stress relief but it got my hopes up only to be brought crashing down to reality! What this application does to otherwise confident, hard working, well adjusted students! -
Waw congratulations!! it's great to see that someone from this forum made it! Revel in your happiness- it's well deserved!
-
Thank you all for the advice! Yes I should stop worrying.

Three confirmed- you mean us three under this forum topic, right? lol Two years ago when I inquired about the program I was told the following (hopefully I am recalling accurately): Usually around 150 students apply to the SMS program and almost a third of them chose sociology as their stream. In a given year they will choose at the most 7 students for the whol cohort (but most often less) and how many per stream is dependent on the applicants for that year. Now I an not sure if that 7 includes the DrPH applicants. So thi is an extremely tough program to get into. Even more so if you are an international student- which sucks for me!! Now it seems this year there are a record number of applicants across the board in all schools and programs so for all we know the pool is much larger- but cohorts remain the same or are getting smaller. It is so tough out there!! I truly wish us all the best- I hope one of us three gets in if we cannot all get in. Fingers crossed we get some positive news soon!!

I was admitted into a program with funding for 4 years and invited to the recruitment weekend in March. Very excited to go meet possible cohort, current students, faculty and see the campus. Was informed there will be one on one interviews with some of the faculty. What is that all about? What should I expect in these personal sessions? Is this the norm? How should I prepare myself, do I even need to?

According to the results page someone was accepted to the SMS PhD on the 17th via the phone. To whomever it is congratulations for being accepted- that's amazing.
-
I know when I saw the acceptances and rejections from the MPH track I freaked out!! I heard that schools usually decide on their PhD's first then Masters because some PhD applicants are asked to join the Masters program. But I guess in this instance that is not the case. The waiting is torturous and if the poster on the results page is right we have another week or two of this hell!
-
I see on the results page that there are others who have been accepted to Syracuse. Come out...come out whereever you are. Congratulations! Would love to hear from you!! What are your interests and what are your thoughts on the program?
-
The days seem to go by so slowly.....I don't know if I can handle another week or 2 of this!!
-
Just wondering who else applied to Columbia's SMS program under the Sociology stream. Anyone hear anything? Going crazy with the silence and all the waiting.
-
You have every right to vent. What I love about GradCafe is that you have a place to do so within a community that will understand and sympathize. In the meantime you do have 2 other schools to hear from.. Heres hoping you receive some great news real soon!

Fall 2011 applications - anyone out there?
Curlygrrl replied to periepi2011's topic in Public Health Forum
Nothing yet at least from Columbia cannot speak to NYU -
Wow I am shocked that someone with your stats was rejected. Makes you wonder what these adcomms are looking for especially when you say that there was a clear fit between you and some of the faculty above and beyond your stellar stats. I am confused for you....
-
Now did you see any of us in your dream there with you??
-
Wow you're right age is usually not discussed- I never took stock or thought of that before. Even in the focus of intersectionality which as a complex theory is trying to focus on the multitude of categories when discussing what differentiates us and the inequities that are fostered through them. The only time I have read about age in regards to a factor of inequity has been in relation to the state of the mother while in utero and its impact on later development or in regards to the social determinant of health of early childhood education and development. BTW, I just love this! Only on a board like this do we think each other research foci are COOL!!! My dear friends whom I adore but have left school long ago, their eyes glaze whenever I share what I got excited about or something I've read or am working on- so its nice to meet people even cyberly that can appreciate where you are and what you hope to do! So thank you!
-
Wow, thanks Missca! Couldn't agree with you more in regards to the primarily HIV/AIDS focus when it comes to queer health. Not that it doesn't have it's place, but there is such a limited view on the queer community currently- and it needs to be changed! I am very excited at the prospect of doing this kind of research- so I hope I get accepted somewhere that could help foster my current academic and research focus.

Did you sit in on any classes when you visited? I sat in through two (a human rights course and a gender and sexuality course) and was so impressed. Impressed with the faculty, the students and even the administration. While a big university in a big city everyone was very close, helpful and so proud to be part of the program. Only made me want to go there even more! A rejection from SMS will really hurt!

I am glad I am not the only one going crazy here! I love hearing about other people's research interests. Wherever we end up we are all colleagues. Since we are sharing: I hope to unpack the neoliberal, heteronormative and homonormative nature of queer social policy. How in essence today's queer policies reinforce heternormative models and inequities in queer health (broadly defined). Furthermore, what role can queer rights social movements play in influencing an equity rather than an equality policy focus? By addressing these questions I hope to argue that the equality-based phase of queer political struggles and social movements must end and that the next phase should entail broader demands for the inclusion of queer interests and identities across the spectrum through an equitable focus on social policy. My fingers are crossed for us all during this anxious and restless next few days or worse weeks!!
