Columbia PhD or joint PhD with Education

Hi all,

I am buckling down and trying to narrow down my choices for applying for a PhD program for 2012. I wrote to a professor from undergrad and she advised I do some more research on Columbia before applying. Her opinion was that the faculty does interesting research, but the program is not very cohesive. Also, that PhDs may not have much future weight from there, although she wasn't sure.

Any opinions from current students or anyone who's looked into the program? I'm considering the joint program with the Teacher's College since I am interested in activist/applied anthropology.
